Fans fearful over the likelihood of a third season of BBC’s Sherlock need worry no longer. Show runner Steven Moffat conformed yesterday that a third season is on the way.
All week, Moffat playfully suggested over Twitter that a third season would most likely be impossible due to events to come in the series finale. Many fans took this to mean that a major character death was on the cards. The impression was deepened by Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch who, during the TCA Winter Press Tour recently, commented ‘You might see that it’s quite hard for me to make it back, after the end of the last episode.’
However Moffat finally put fears to rest by confirming last night that a third season had already been commissioned at the same time as the second. Tweeting just after the series finale last night Moffat told fans:
#Sherlock Yes of course there’s going to be a third series – it was commissioned at the same time as the second. Gotcha!
