The CW announced additional episode orders for three freshman series today.
Charmed, All American, and Legacies have each been given additional episode orders as follows: Charmed received the traditional ‘back 9’ with which to round out its first season to 22 episodes, thus making it a practical shoe-in for season 2, while both All American and Legacies each bagged only 3, bringing their final count to 16 apiece.
Notably, the CW ordered 5 more scripts for All American, which translated to only 3 actual additional episodes. Of the three additional script orders for Legacies, all 3 were included in the final season count.
While the CW has renewed freshman shows with lowered episode counts for second seasons in the past (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend received 18 episodes in season one, but only 13 in seasons 2 and 3), fans may be right to be mildly concerned over the future of Legacies, and in particular, All American.
While renewal news may still be a blip on the horizon at this time of the year, the CW’s mid-season lineup is not. The network still has 5 series set to premiere in the new year including new drama series Roswell New Mexico, and In the Dark, and returning favorites Jane the Virgin, iZombie, and The 100.
If both Roswell and In the Dark prove successful, it may force a decision between All American and Legacies, as the network likely won’t have room in its schedule for every show, and cancelling established veterans Arrow or The Flash to make room for a lower rated newbie would seem like a rash move at this point.
No doubt the network will be closely studying the performance of the mid-season slate, and in particular both new dramas, before making a decision on what to keep and what to ditch next season.
