The much-anticipated Timeless finale/wrap up movie/2-episode-resolution/call-it-what-you-like-at-least-we-get-to-see-Lucy-Wyatt-Rufus-and-Flynn-together-on-tv-again finally has a premiere date.

Two back to back episodes will air on NBC on Thursday, Dec. 20 at 8/7, and will feature the full cast, including Abigail Spencer (Lucy), Matt Lanter (Wyatt), Malcolm Barrett (Rufus), Goran Višnjić (Flynn), Paterson Joseph (Connor), Sakina Jaffrey (Denise) and Claudia Doumit (Jiya).

The news came Friday, via both Sony and NBC’s Timeless accounts.

The two installments will be directed by John Showalter, director of some of the show’s most memorable episodes including “The Capture of Benedict Arnold”, “The Murder of Jesse James”, “Hollywoodland” and “The General”.

The first hour was penned by Lauren Greer (co-writer “The Day Reagan Was Shot”), with Arika Lisanne (writer “Stranded”, “The Red Scare” co-writer “The War To End All Wars” and ”The Day Reagan Was Shot.”) taking writing duties on hour two.

The season 2 finale, which aired in May 2018, left fans with an unbearable cliffhanger in which Rufus was fatally shot. However days later, a second battered version of the lifeboat from the future landed in the bunker with future versions of Wyatt and Lucy, who hit the bereaved team with the teasing final line of the episode:

“Well, what are you waiting for. You guys wanna get Rufus back or what?”

Of course the line was set to be a precursor to the events of a third season, but when Sony and NBC failed to reach a financial agreement that could keep the show on the air over another season, Timeless was cancelled. In the months that followed, fans campaigned hard to see a resolution to the time-travelling adventures of Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus. Although a third season seemed never to have been an option, with series creator Eric Kripke advising fans that a (then) potential “two hour movie” represented “our best shot” at providing fans the closure they desperately wanted.
