Just a couple of month ago the buzz surrounding Universal’s ambitious book to screen adaptation of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series was high.
A trilogy of movies was discussed along with two limited run TV series. Ron Howard was onboard to direct Akiva Goldsman’s script, with Stephen King, Brian Grazer and Goldsman producing. Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men) was set to take on the title role as gunslinging Roland Deschain.
Now it appears Universal has gone cold on the idea with Deadline reporting that the studio has passed on the project.
Insiders suggest that although Universal loved both the filmmakers and the project, they have invested heavily in several upcoming ‘tent pole’ projects and couldn’t make a go of Dark Tower with the current budget in its business model.
The news leaves the filmmakers searching for a new backer.
