'American Crime Story' Season 2, Episode 9 Finale 'Alone' Recap: Last Moments [SPOILERS]

After Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss) found out that his life was a lie, he turned himself into a murderer. In 1997, he committed five crimes from April to July. His kill list included his almost-lover Gianni Versace (Eduardo Rodriguez). But when the authorities identified Cunanan as the killer, he didn’t freak out. The Season finale of “American Crime Story,” titled “Alone,” features the last moments of our characters, and wraps it up to an end.

Gianni’s Last Day

July 15, 1997. It was a normal day until Gianni gets shot in front of his mansion. A witness said that Andrew shot Gianni point blank. Cunanan shot him with two bullets to the head and he collapsed in an instant. Andrew ran from the scene. By night, there were authorities looking for him in the area.
Andrew finds an abandoned ferry in Miami. He breaks in and stays there to celebrate. The next day, Andrew tries to escape the area. He put on his best clothes and drove to the exit. Upon arriving, Andrew saw that there was a checkpoint. Of course, on instinct, Andrew drove away so that the authorities will not catch him. He stops by a house and checks his map. A man talks to Andrew and asked if he’s lost. Andrew confirms the man’s question but tells him a different name. Before the man identifies Andrew as the serial killer in the news, he drives away.
Andrew finds refuge through a friend named Ronnie (Max Greenfield). He stays hidden in the same ferry before the police trace his location. While the authorities interrogate Ronnie, Andrew sees their every move through live television. Ronnie says that Andrew is not hiding. Instead, he’s trying to show himself. Andrew is trying to let the world know how he feels about his sexual orientation and childhood trauma.
He then calls his dad, Modesto (Jon Jon Briones) in the Philippines. They talk for a few minutes, where Andrew asks his dad to come to him. Modesto obliges and asks Andrew to wait for him. Modesto packed his bags and flew back to America. But right after that, Andrew watches an interview with his father that made him mad. He gets his gun and shoots the television screen.

Versace in Milan

While mourning for his brother Gianni, Donatella goes back to their hometown in Milan. Antonio D’Amico (Ricky Martin), Gianni’s lover, talks to Donatella about Gianni’s money issues and his possessions. Antonio feels like the Versaces are throwing him away. Donatella pushes him and tells him that the company owns everything that they have. As Gianni’s lover, Antonio was dependent on the Versaces. Now that Gianni’s dead, he has nothing as well.
Still, in seclusion, Andrew monitors the next step of the authorities through television. At that moment, all of Gianni’s family and friends visit him in his wake. Visitors include the late Princess Diana and supermodel Naomi Campbell. Diana was a wearer of the Versace creations. Naomi was a model for the Versace brand for a long time. During Gianni’s final mass, Antonio arrived in the church. In the last blessing, Antonio was not treated like family by the priest. Andrew monitors the ceremony as well through his television in the living room. He even sings with the choirs in the church.
Andrew then shaves his head. The next day, an agent discovers his place. The agent alerts the other authorities in the area. This turns all the attention to the ferry Andrew was staying in. Andrew, still inside, sees his younger self on his bed. He looks at it for a while until the police cut off his power supply.
They then throw a smoke grenade in the boat. Andrew goes to his room and sits on his bed. He points a gun to his mouth and pulls the trigger. Before the police could get to him, Andrew was dead. Everything goes back to the first moments of Andrew and Gianni together. They were in a theater, where Andrew confesses his love for Gianni and tries to be with him. But to Gianni, Andrew was nothing but a man full of potential. Andrew tries to kiss Gianni, but he refuses. He gets declined by Gianni. Andrew still insists that they get dinner together. But again, Gianni drops his offer. Gianni walks away, and that was the last time they ever saw each other.
When the police discovered Andrew’s body soaking in blood, it was too late. He was lifeless. They took out his body from the crime scene and takes it with them.

‘American Crime Story Season’ 2 Finale: Everyone is alone

After the burial, Donatella makes a confession. She tells the story of how Gianni called her on the morning of his assassination. He was checking up on her as Donatella was having her show. The second time Gianni called Donatella, she ignored him. And that’s what Donatella feels bad about. It’s her not taking the last call from Gianni.
Meanwhile, Antonio emptied a pill container on a plate. He puts all it in his hand and drinks it all. While Donatella visits his brother’s resting place, Antonio killed himself by overdosing. As the loose ties get latched on to each other, another death occurs.
To say the least, all the characters didn’t have anyone to lean on during American Crime Story’s finale episode. No one was with anyone during the gruesome events that occurred in 1999. Gianni was alone on the way home from a morning jog. Andrew was on his own dealing with the things he caused. Antonio has nothing to live on following the death of his lover. Donatella will manage the Versace empire without Gianni.
They were all alone after all.
