‘American Idol’ Season 16, Episode 12: 'Top 24 Celebrity Duets' Part 2 Recap

The remaining “American Idol” hopefuls continue to prove that they deserve to be in the Top 14. They try to blend with their celebrity partners, and they also did their best to impress the audience and the judges. Here’s what went down during the second part of the Top 24 Celebrity Duets.

Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Bebe Rexha

Caleb and Bebe performed “Meant To Be” by Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line. The two had excellent chemistry, but Caleb seemed so uncomfortable on stage during their performance.

Nevertheless, the “American Idol” judges loved and enjoyed what Caleb and Bebe showed. The judges were also happy to see that Caleb was having fun even just for once.

Ada Vox and Lea Michele

Two divas performed for us tonight and they were none other than Ada and Lea Michele. They sang “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked.”

Ada and Lea Michele’s voice blend perfectly, and it looks like they were made for each other. Lionel said that a star was born, while Katy added that she would want to buy a ticket for Ada’s performance.

Maddie Poppe and Colbie Caillat

Maddie and Colbie Caillat sang one of the latter’s famous songs, “Bubbly.” There’s no doubt that their voices complemented each other. The only problem? The song was too light, and it doesn’t excite anyone that much. But since Maddie and Colbie are both great singers, they delivered a satisfying “American Idol” performance.

Ron Bultongez and Banners

Ron performed with Banners, and sang “Someone To You.” Ron had a hard time remembering the lyrics of the song, but his partner calmed him down and assured him that they could do it.

Ron was a little bit uncomfortable with their “American Idol” performance, but his voice still managed to sound fantastic, and the judges love him.

Amelia Hammer Harris and Bebe Rexha

There’s no doubt that Amelia and Bebe Rexha sound great together. They sang “Me, Myself & I” by G-Eazy and Bebe Rexha and Amelia used her powerful vocals to impress everyone in the “American Idol” studio.

Katy hoped for more time with Amelia, and Luke noted that Amelia did well during her performance with Bebe Rexha.

Shannon O’Hara and Cam

Shannon and Cam performed “Burning House” for their Top 24 All-Star Duets performance. The two definitely has harmony in their sound and music, and it was good that Shannon stuck with her country voice.

Shannon also controlled her tone well, and she used her unique voice to amaze the everyone in the studio.

Alyssa Raghu and Banners

Alyssa displayed her singing prowess from the “American Idol” auditions until her Solo Performance, but during her Duet Performance with Banners, it seemed that something was missing. Even the judges noticed it, and Lionel told Alyssa that her performance was not a prime example of what she can do.

Alyssa and Banners sang Coldplay’s “Yellow.” However. We all know that Alyssa is still very young, so there’s more time to improve and grow.

Marcio Donaldson and Allen Stone

Unlike Marcio’s doubtful past performances, this time he showed that he is more than ready to win “American Idol.” Marcio was supposed to be performing with Toni Braxton, but Toni fell ill, so Marcio performed with Allen Stone instead.

Marcio and Allen sang Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On.” Just as expected, Allen did it smoothly, and he absolutely brought out the best in Marcio!

Jurnee and Lea Michele

Jurnee and Lea Michele delivered Lea’s “Run To You.” Jurnee had a better stage presence tonight compared to her other performances, and it looks like Lea’s presence helped her too.

Jurnee and Lea’s voice was in perfect harmony with each other, so there’s no doubt that Jurnee will be part of the Top 14! Jurnee is getting better and better with each passing day, so everyone probably wants to see her perform in the finale.

Garrett Jacobs and Colbie Caillat

Garrett confessed that he would be thinking of his girlfriend while singing the song “Lucky” by Colbie Caillat and Jason Mraz. Garrett sang with Colbie, and though it may not be his best “American Idol” performance, Luke said that he was proud of the growth he sees in Garrett.

A surprise was also waiting for Garrett in the end, as his girlfriend was present in the audience too!

Mara Justine and Rachel Platten

Mara and Rachel Platten performed Rachel’s biggest hit song called “Fight Song.” Rachel encouraged Mara to be brave, and she also said that Mara is good enough and perfect the way she is. This encouragement from Rachel probably helped Mara boost her confidence during their “American Idol” duet performance.

Rachel told the judges that she knew that they were looking for Mara’s different side. Katy noted that Rachel just gave Mara a gift.

Effie Passero and Cam

Just like Marcio, Effie was supposed to be performing with Jessie J, but the singer wasn’t present. So Effie sang with Cam. The two sang Cam’s new single, titled “Diane.”

Lionel told Effie that she was on fire, so it was surprising to know that Effie didn’t manage to make it to the next round.

Meanwhile, Mara Justine, Jurnee, Maddie Poppe, Ada Vox, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Garrett Jacobs, Marcio Donaldson, Cade Foehner, Michelle Sussett, Dennis Lorenzo, Gabby Barrett, Jonny Brenns, Michael J. Woodard, and Catie Turner completed the Top 14!

“American Idol” continues next Sunday, April 22nd, with the Live Finals at 8/7c on ABC.
