It’s the reboot didn’t know we wanted.

No, not that one. Or that one. A new one.

Sex and the City will return for another Manolo Blahnik-heeled stroll through New York city as And Just Like That…, a new chapter in the life of Carrie Bradshaw, begins production in late Spring, 2021.

The 10 episode chapter, which marks a quasi rather than a full reboot, comes from HBO Max, and will follow Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte — but not Kim Kattrall’s Samantha — as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s.

The new Max original series is based on the book Sex and the City by Candice Bushnell and the original TV series created by Darren Star and is executive produced by Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, and Michael Patrick King.

“I grew up with these characters, and I can’t wait to see how their story has evolved in this new chapter, with the honesty, poignancy, humor and the beloved city that has always defined them,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content, HBO Max.

Kattrall has been upfront about her determination to step away from both the franchise and her character Samantha Jones, telling Piers Morgan in a 2017 interview “It’s a great part. I played it past the finish line and then some, and I loved it. And another actress should [now] play it.”

Plans on how to handle a Samantha-less reboot (is she dead? Did she quit New York? Is she being ghosted by her friends?) are keeping SATC fans guessing.

Kattrall, in the same 2017 interview, noted the lack of diversity in the original series, and suggested “An African-American Samantha Jones, or a Hispanic Samantha Jones” as a potential next incarnation of her character.

Meanwhile, Sarah Jessica Parker took to Instagram today to confirm Kattrall’s absence from the new 10 part series.

“Samantha isn’t part of this story,” Parker wrote. “But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do.”
