'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend' Season 3 Episode 9 'Nathaniel Gets The Message' Recap: 100th Song and Twerking Away Our Problems [SPOILERS]

We pick up right where we left off on tonight’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” where Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) is in front of Nathaniel’s (Scott Michael Foster) door with words she can’t spit out. After realizing her love for him might turn into an obsession, Rebecca breaks up with Nathaniel. The unexpected breakup leads Nathaniel to make an unlikely friendship. Meanwhile, Darryl (Pate Gardner) and Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III) try to earn some cash.
“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” also hits a milestone with their 100th song! The CW show has given us a lot of crazy catchy musical numbers such as “Heavy Boobs” and “The Sexy Getting Ready Song,” and it continues to give us just that. For season 3, episode 9, the musical numbers are wackier and sexier than ever. Their 100th song is a funny ballad that emphasizes how we can all save the world if we cut out just one thing from our lives.

The ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ wants to help

Rebecca’s therapist, Dr. Daniel Shin (Jay Hayden), tells her that all her energy for her relationships could be put to better use. Rather than obsess over another romantic entanglement, Rebecca should try volunteering. Then it cuts to the show’s 100th song, “Without Love, We Can Save The World.” It’s a happy and funny number that deliberately misses the point. With so much energy left inside her, Rebecca volunteers to be Valencia’s assistant (Gabrielle Ruiz) for an engagement party. Valencia agrees because it was a free help and having an assistant seemed fancy.

We then cut to meeting Valencia’s clients, Marty (Hunter Stiebel) and Ally (Sofia Gonzalez). Marty was a Grocery employee that Greg (Santino Fontana) tried to help get the girl of his dreams, Ally. It’s nice for the show to bring back a few minor characters every once in a while to see how they are doing. But during the meeting, Rebecca noticed something off with Ally. Most brides-to-be are excited about any event related to the wedding, but Ally was distant and preoccupied.
Knowing she can’t let someone so in love fall with a heartbreaker, Rebecca helps Marty. She discovers Ally cheating on Marty with another man, and Rebecca does what she does best—making a scene. Rebecca tells everyone at the rehearsal dinner that Ally is cheating on Marty. But what came next was a reaction Rebecca didn’t expect. Marty tells Rebecca he knows about the cheating, but he loves Ally and wouldn’t want to be with anyone else. So the wedding is on, and Rebecca failed to help anyone.

Nathaniel is in denial about his true feelings about the break-up. Luckily for him, he’s not the only one going through hardship. White Josh (David Hull) is also sulking around about his “mutual breakup” with Darryl. The two bond over their mutual denial, lack of body fat, and working out. But two white dudes working out to bury their feelings have to show off their eight-packs. White Josh invites Nathaniel to a gay bar, filled with hot men and Bachelorette parties.
The night starts out great with White Josh dancing with a hot guy and Nathaniel flirting with an insanely attractive girl. But they can’t get their minds off their exes. They both realize that the breakups hit them hard despite their good looks. They had a bar filled with people who think they are hot. But it wasn’t enough because they have problems too. The scene then cuts to a very confusing but hot musical number called “Fit Hot Guys Have Problems Too.” The “Magic Mike” inspired number is hilarious; White Josh and Nathaniel don’t only strip away the clothes but also their feelings.  During the imaginary scenario, Josh joins in, and that’s where we discover his new job.

Gogo Dancers and Poker Chips for eggs

Money is tight for a few characters on “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” especially for Josh who is still trying to find his purpose in life. He tells people his new job is somewhat being a fireman. Technically, it is, because he dresses up like a fireman. When White Josh and Nathaniel discover his secret, Josh admits he doesn’t know what he wants to do. But he clarifies he is not a pole dancer; he is a Gogo dancer. It’s a way for him to make some cash while he tries to set up his goals in life. Meanwhile, Darryl spent most of his money on another egg donor. Unfortunately, his sperm just won’t stick. Only as Darryl runs out of options and cash for another egg donor, lady luck walks in.

Tim (Michael McMillian) and Jim (Burl Moseley) invite Darryl to their poker night. During his first try, Darryl won enough cash to get another donor. But instead of walking away, he comes back for a second win. Sadly, he lost to Mrs. Hernandez and is back to square one. When Rebecca finds Darryl looking hopeless and broke, she volunteers to be his egg donor. It’s great, but she is entirely aware of the fact she has no idea what she has gotten herself caught up in.
“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” returns Friday, January 26th, with “Oh, Nataniel It’s On!” at 8/9c on The CW.
