Dan Aykroyd Slams Director Paul Feig On Ghostbusters Overspending

“Ghostbusters” original cast member Dan Aykroyd slammed the remake’s director Paul Feig for overspending on the reboot. Aykroyd believes that it is the main factor why “Ghostbusters” won’t be having a sequel any time soon. The remake was a controversial prospect pre-release online, with its gender-bended casting and hugely different storyline as compared to the 1984 original (despite having the actors of the original film appear in cameos and to endorse the film).

When the “Ghostbusters” remake came out, critical reception turned out to be more positive than the flak it received online. However, it failed to connect box office wise, finishing its theatrical run with $229 million overall earnings. With a production budget of $144 million, it just means that the film failed to even make a breakeven profit, thus putting any plans for a sequel on a halt. While the fallout can take the blame, Aykroyd has his lenses pinned on the director.

Aykroyd Slams Paul Feig On The Sunday Brunch

In an interview during Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, Aykroyd discussed “Ghostbusters,” praised the cast and then went on to repeatedly spill out his savage remarks about Paul Feig.

Aykroyd claims that Feig did not listen to suggestions from the producers of the film, causing production costs to skyrocket. The reshoots reportedly even cost around $30 to $40 million.

The actor’s statement was also reportedly edited down when the show appeared on Channel 4’s streaming service, indicating that a couple of higher-ups were not too happy about what Aykroyd had to say.

Aykroyd appeared in the “Ghostbusters” remake as a taxi driver and also supported the film during the promotion. This is the first time someone involved in the production for “Ghostbusters” came out to speak against Feig’s direction. Despite this, the director has been very positive about the experience (minus the flak he’s getting), even saying that he’s still interested in making the sequel.

As of now, the future of the “Ghostbusters” franchise is uncertain, with reports of an animated film to be released as a sequel instead of a live-action movie.
