'Game of Thrones:' Every Season 8 Death So Far

This article contains spoilers for “Game of Thrones” Season 8 episode 5, “The Bells.”

Game of Thrones Season 8 has seen some of the biggest battles in television history. We’ve seen the battle between the living and the dead in episode three and just recently, the battle of the queens. Between these, the death toll came quite fast and high with a number of the remaining major characters of the show dropping like dead flies. By the end of this week’s episode, we’re left with a literal handful of major characters. So before we get into the last and final episode of Game of Thrones next week, let’s take a look at the characters who perished in this season.

Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 4

HBO

Battle of Winterfell

Before the battle of Winterfell even began, we already knew a lot of people would die in the final showdown between the living and the dead. It’s literally the longest battle in television history. Beloved people were bound to die. The first to bite the dust was Jon’s good friend from the Night Watch Edd who died saving Sam’s life. Then, next came the brave Lyanna Mormont who died in the process of killing a giant nightwalker. Beric Dondarrion followed soon enough after sacrificing himself so Arya could get away. And in the name of protecting the people they care about, Theon Greyjoy and Jorah Mormont fought until their very last breaths. The only person who didn’t die because of the battle was Melisandre. After the triumph of the living, it seemed like she has served her purpose so she took her magical necklace off and crumbled into dust.

Sad as it may, these deaths were actually some of the most justified and sincere deaths of the season. For most of these characters, they died fighting for what they cared about redeeming themselves. But, this is only a taste for what’s to come in the next episodes.

The Failed Attack

Without waiting for her men to fully recover and for a full proof plan of attack, Daenerys immediately set her sights to conquer King’s Landing. This mistake has cost her one of the greatest loses in her life. In the failed attack, she watched as her dragon Rhaegal was brutally shot out of the sky. Then, her fleet was attacked and her best friend Missandei was taken. When the two warring queens failed to reach an agreement, it was Missandei who paid with her life right in front of the man she loved and her best friend and queen. She left only one word loud and clear for her dying wish “Dracarys.”

King’s Landing Genocide

Compared to all the battles in Game of Thrones, the battle of King’s Landing is just pure slaughter. Millions of innocent people in Kings Landing lost their lives to Daenerys’ brutal rain of fire on the city. To say the least, this outcome was a surprise as well as a disappointment to many. Before that, Varys also lost his life to dragon fire after Tyrion revealed his treason to Daenerys.

In the battle, Euron Greyjoy finally met his end after facing off with Jaime Lannister who was trying to get to Cersei. Cersei’s adviser Qyburn, on the other hand, died at the hands of his own creation the zombie Mountain. And speaking of the Mountain, he and his brother, Sandor Clegane, finally got the final showdown that they deserved (Cleganebowl!). Both met their demise when the Hound took his brother with him down to the burning hell below them. As for Cersei and Jaime, they almost managed to escape and survive. But, they were ultimately trapped in the lower levels of the Red Keep where they were crushed by the ruins of the fallen building.

With one last episode left in the Game of Thrones, there is bound to be an addition to the death toll. And we’ll just have to wait and see who’ll be the last on that list.

The final episode of Game of Thrones continues next Sunday at 9/8c on HBO.
