'Gotham' Season 4, Episode 7 'A Day in the Narrows' Recap: The Pyg Hunt Is On [SPOILERS]

The manhunt for Professor Pyg (Michael Cerveris) just got intense, and the Gotham Police Department is doing everything in its power to catch him—even going as far as recruiting Penguin’s (Robin Lord Taylor) men. But tonight’s episode of  “Gotham” also shows us how the GCPD slowly realizes its mistake of siding with Penguin as they take on the manhunt for Pyg together. On the other hand, we’ve got the Sirens—composed of Barbara Keen (Erin Richards), Tabitha Galavan (Jessica Lucas), and Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova)—setting up shop following Ra’s Al Ghul’s death. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) is slowly warming up to the playboy millionaire attitude as he feels the weight of killing Ra’s.

After the previous episode’s carnage, Professor Pyg is amping up his bloody campaign to clean Gotham up from its dirty cops. Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) sits in Harvey Bullock’s (Donal Logue) office and reads about Professor Pyg’s mayhem. Harvey is surprisingly doing fine after his throat was cut previously, and he reports for duty. Just as Jim asks about Harvey’s work with Penguin, a group of delivery guys comes in with bloody boxes. It causes a fuss, and once Jim opens one, he finds that they’ve been sent 44 boxes of pig’s heads—each one addressed to every cop in the precinct. Of course, there’s nothing for Jim since Professor Pyg has this weird fondness for him. It turns out that Pyg is now going after the entire GCPD and not just dirty cops.
Gordon then frees the delivery guys from detainment and proceeds to talk to Harvey about their game plan. But just as he comes up to him, Penguin appears with a new security consultant named Headhunter (Kyle Vincent Terry). Harvey says that he showed up to offer his help in finding Professor Pyg. Jim doesn’t buy it. Headhunter formally introduces himself to Jim and shows him his two guns. According to him, he needs the two because he always shoots twice, with the second shot being his signature. Jim reiterates that he will never work with him, but Penguin says otherwise, especially since it was Harvey who actually asked for their help.

Detective Jamie Harper (Kelcy Griffin) informs them that three police officers have gone missing, indicating that Professor Pyg has begun his purge of the GCPD. They were taken to the Narrows, Gotham’s poorest area. They head over to the place with Penguin’s men participating in the search. Once they arrive, they are met with hostility from the tenants. Harvey then orders them to storm the place, with Jim hesitant, thinking that violence is not the way to go. Headhunter happily participates and has his fill of beating people up.
Jim tries to do things his way and knocks on the door of a woman’s apartment. He goes in and assures her that he won’t hurt her. As he asks about what she saw, Headhunter comes in and drags the woman’s sickly husband outside so he can violently coerce him to talk. Jim tries to stop Headhunter and a gun-pointing match begins between Penguin’s men and the GCPD. Out of fear, the woman runs outside and tells them that Pyg went to an abandoned place in Hoover Island. Jim takes Harvey aside and tells him that what they’re doing is not right. Harvey doesn’t seem to care at all, as long as they get what they need.
They arrive at Hoover Island where Jim finds two of the officers who were taken. One’s dead but the other one is alive. Meanwhile, Penguin watches the news unfold on TV at Sofia Falcone’s (Crystal Reed) orphanage. He’s happy with the results, but Sofia is iffy. Penguins asks her why and she tells him that her father wouldn’t have worked with the GCPD because they are competent, and in the end they will fail, dragging Penguin along with them. This irritates Penguin, and he tells Sofia that he will be more involved with the GCPD’s operations.

In an ambulance, Jim talks to the surviving officer as he gets a call from Harvey that the Officer Patel, the third kidnapping victim, hasn’t been found. Jim then tries to talk some sense to the cop who was now regretting his work with Penguin. Jim seems to have broken through him and he vows to work with Jim again. He then asks the officer if he saw where Pyg was going after they took him. The officer tells Jim that Pyg is planning something big and that he took Patel to an abandoned courthouse in the Narrows. Jim arrives at the place, only to find Headhunter tailing him. The GCPD arrives as well as Penguin and his men. There’s blood on the pavement, meaning this is where Pyg brought Patel.
A commotion starts outside the old courthouse, and Jim receives an encrypted call from Pyg telling him that he should get himself out of there. It was all a setup, and those going in the building to find Patel will be killed. Jim tries to get Harvey to call off the search, but both Harvey and Penguin insists that Pyg is hiding in it. Despite Jim’s efforts to convince them both, they still go in as Harvey orders him to stand down.

Inside the building, Harvey sees someone who appears to Pyg. He shoots him and finds out that it was actually Officer Patel. Pyg was nowhere in sight, but he rigged the place with machine guns that swept through the place. Police officers and some of Penguin’s men were killed (Headhunter was also shot in the eye) and Harvey is trapped. Outside, Penguin and Jim realize that what they’re hearing isn’t from any of their men, and Jim goes in to save them. Once inside, Jim shoots the machine guns with a grenade launcher and disables the trap. He saves them all, and Harvey can’t help but be ashamed of what he did. Not only did he put his cops in danger and sent others to their deaths, he also shot one.
Back in the GCPD, the press asks Penguin if he was the one who sent the cops to the abandoned courthouse. He denies it and puts the blame on Harvey. Jim walks in, and the reporters come after him. During the interview, Jim says that the GCPD is going to take Professor Pyg down. As he makes his way to Harvey’s office, he is able to regain the respect of the police officers. He’s considered a hero and he might have just started cleaning up the GCPD himself. Again, he receives a call from Pyg, who tells him that it was all a part of his plan. It’s then revealed that Pyg was actually the injured police officer in the ambulance with Jim. He also tells Jim to prepare for what’s coming—an epic and spectacle with Jim being a part of the play.
Later, Penguins returns to his club and kills Headhunter by stabbing him twice. The second one, according to Penguin, being his signature.

The Sirens are back in business

After Ra’s Al Ghul’s death, Barbara finds no point in maintaining her business with Tabitha and Selina and lets them go. To her, everything they were doing was for Ra’s; but now that he’s gone, they are officially out of business. Tabitha and Selina urge her to keep the business going, as they can still spy on people and get valuable intel. Barbara refuses and tells them that they’re on their own. As she leaves, Selina tells Tabitha that she found a gang whom they can steal from. She wants them to hit them to prove to Barbara that they can still do business. But Tabitha thinks otherwise because they won’t be able to rip off one of Gotham’s biggest motorcycle gangs that easy. Selina storms off to do it on her own.

Selina then breaks in the gang’s hideout and successfully gets the stash of money activating an alarm along the way. The gang springs up to action and finds that their money is gone. Furious, the leader unleashes his anger on his mechanic and kills him by shoving his face on a moving motorcycle tire as Selina watches in horror.
Back in Barbara’s club, Tabitha gets a call from Selina telling her that she’s stuck in the gang’s hideout. They called for backup and Selina could be found at any moment. Tabitha tells her to wait and informs Barbara where Selina is. She suits up to get her and tries to ask for Barbara’s help, to which she still refuses.

Tabitha arrives and manages to find Selina. However, the gang’s backup has arrived, and it’s too many for them both to take on. But things take a turn for the better as Barbara arrives asking the men if they ordered a meal from her as she swiftly shoots five of them. Barbara gets her cut from the money and prepares to leave as Tabitha and Selina watches. As soon as Barbara leaves them, Selina asks if they’re ‘over’ just like that. Barbara smiles and tells them to come back to her place because they have a business to run, and the three of them walk out together as the Sirens.

Bruce Wayne, the young playboy millionaire

Bruce is still reeling from how he killed Ra’s Al Ghul. He’s now angry and easily irritated. He hosts a fundraiser in his mansion and Alfred (Sean Pertwee) tries to cheer him up. But nothing could really make him feel better, so he storms off to cool down. Alfred runs after him and asks about how Bruce is feeling. Clearly, he’s not ready to face what he did head on, and he tells Alfred to get off his back. He couldn’t stop thinking about what he did. Bruce says that he should feel bad and guilty, but instead, he’s angry. Again, Bruce storms off to get some air.
As Bruce tries to calm himself down in the kitchen, Grace Blomdhal (Guest Star Samia Finnerty), Bruce’s former classmate, comes in and asks him if he wants to go somewhere. He agrees, and they head out. She brings him to one of her friend Brandon’s apartment, where they are enjoying a drink. Grace introduces Bruce to them, and Brandon welcomes him with sarcasm and hostility. Because of Bruce’s anger, he imagines himself coming at Brandon and beating him up. But as he tries to further Bruce’s anger by taunting him, Grace asks him about the club that he wanted to go to. With the situation diffused, they all leave for the club.
As soon as they arrive, the bouncer prevents them from entering. Brandon tries to flaunt his arrogance and demand to be let in. The bouncer doesn’t budge and Brandon is pissed. Bruce then goes to talk to the club’s owner. He comes back right away and tells his new friends to come in, except for Brandon. It turns out, Bruce bought the place so they could go in. Not bad for a billionaire playboy in the making. Inside, Bruce parties hard and makes out repeatedly with Grace, making him go closer and closer to being the asshole Bruce Wayne alter-ego.
The episode ends with the GCPD on the way to redemption. Jim sees a cop bring in a thief. As the thief hands him his license, a detective tells him that they don’t honor it anymore.

‘Gotham: A Day in the Narrows’ Overall Verdict

Tonight’s episode of “Gotham” sure did a great job in setting up an interesting foe and showing how Bruce Wayne got into his “bad boy” side. The introduction of Headhunter was a welcome addition albeit shortlived. He was an impressive assassin in the comics and was even recruited to kill Jim Gordon. I honestly thought he’d move on to be one of Penguin’s resident henchmen like Victor Zsasz, but he ended up dying anyway. Professor Pyg is shaping up to be one hard killer to catch, and I can’t wait how his story would flesh out in the end, especially when he teams up with the Scarecrow somewhere along the season.
“Gotham” continues next Thursday with “Stop Hitting Yourself,” 8/9c on FOX.
