'Hamilton' Movie With Original Cast Coming To Theaters On 2021

At long last! Fans of Lin Manuel Miranda’s Broadway hit Hamilton don’t have to be in the room where it happens. Disney certainly didn’t throw away its shot. And now, it’s set to bring the hit musical sensation to the big screen on October 15, 2021.

According to Deadline, Disney shelled out $75 million for the global rights of the film. The best part about all of this though is that the movie isn’t an adaptation. Rather, it’s a live-capture of performances to create a cinematic stage performance for a whole new experience of Hamilton. Director Tommy Kail directed both the musical and the film. It was shot from three live performances and a couple of runs without an audience. This was to ensure that the cinematic element was truly present in the film. And it was shot in 2016 just before the original cast members departed the show at Richard Rogers Theatre.

“Lin-Manuel Miranda created an unforgettable theater experience and a true cultural phenomenon, and it was for good reason that Hamilton was hailed as an astonishing work of art,” said Disney CEO Robert Iger according to The Hollywood Reporter. “All who saw it with the original cast will never forget that singular experience. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to share this same Broadway experience with millions of people around the world.”

Hamilton debuted in 2015. Even before its official opening, it was already a box office sensation. Now, on its fifth-year run, Hamilton continues to play to capacity houses. Along the way, it has garnered numerous accolades. This includes 11 Tony’s, a Grammy, an Olivier Award, and a Pulitzer Prize for drama.

The original Broadway cast of Hamilton’s friend group includes Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, and Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan and James Madison, Anthony Ramos as John Laurens and Philip Hamilton. The Schuyler sisters were played by Renee Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler. Philipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, and Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds. And other original cast members are Christopher Jackson as George Washington and Jonathan Groff as King George.

“I fell in love with musical storytelling growing up with the legendary Howard Ashman-Alan Menken Disney collaborations — The Little MermaidBeauty and The BeastAladdin,” said Miranda. “I’m so proud of what Tommy Kail has been able to capture in this filmed version of Hamilton — a live theatrical experience that feels just as immediate in your local movie theater. We’re excited to partner with Disney to bring the original Broadway company of Hamilton to the largest audience possible.”

“We are thrilled for fans of the show, and new audiences across the world, to experience what it was like on stage — and in the audience — when we shot this at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June of 2016,” Kail added. We wanted to give everyone the same seat, which is what this film can provide.”

Producers for the Hamilton movie include Miranda, Kail, and Jeffrey Seller. While fans await the movie premiere, Miranda is filling the gap with the adaptation of his Tony-winning musical In the Heights. It is a slice of life musical set in a largely-Hispanic neighborhood in the Washington Heights. It is directed by Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu. And it also stars Hamilton alum, Anthony Ramos. In the Heights premiere on June 26, 2020.
