'Krypton' Season 1, Episode 9 'Hope' Recap: The Divide Begins [SPOILERS]

Last episode’s loss was terrible. Krypton lost a lot of fantastic characters even though only the sweetest of them has lost her life. Now, the fight with Brainiac is getting worse. The Voice of Rao has entirely gone rogue. And our heroes’ levels of desperations are so different that they’re splitting the team apart.

Dru Zod (Colin Salmon) is anxious to get his hands on Doomsday. Even with Seg (Cameron Cuffe) and her mother’s disagreement, Lyta (Georgina Campbell) seems eager to support her son’s hellbent desire to unleash Doomsday. On the other hand, Seg and Nyssa (Wallis Day) are more optimistic. They embody this episode’s title of “Hope” as they try to combine the Kandorian forces of Sagitarii and terrorist. This apparent divide may be where we see our heroes take their first steps to fulfilling their futures that we know off.

The Blood of a Zod and The Blood of an El

To regain some of his lost power, the Voice (Blake Ritson) is leaving some carnage behind him. As the Sagitarii investigates what he’s left, Nyssa tries to convince the new head of Kandor’s military guild, Dar-Om (Patrick Buchanan), to help them. However, he flat out rejects it.

Meanwhile, Seg walks through chaos laden streets to their humble abode and finds Lyta pacing anxiously. Seg wants to find the Voice and protect Krypton just as much as Lyta does. However, she also notices his distress on other matters. Seg admits that he sent Kem (Rasmus Hardiker) away to Kryptonopolis to keep him safe, so what happened to Adam and Ona won’t be repeated. Lyta assures him that she’ll be with him no matter what and they proceed to spend some steamy time together.

In Seg’s dream, he comes aboard Brainiac’s ship and there, he meets his end. He jolts awake and finds himself alone in the tent. Lyta, who should’ve been beside Seg, meets up with Dru and finds out that he’s off to set Doomsday free.

On the other hand, Jax-Ur (Hannah Waddingham) faces Daron (Elliot Cowan). Daron expresses regret at her fall from a respected protege of Val-El to the leader of a terrorist organization. She responds by reminding him of his betrayal. Afterward, she brands him with a torture device.

Back to Lyta and her future son, they traverse the catacombs together once more. Seg, Jayna, and Nyssa catch up to them in time. But, Dru surprises them all when he reveals who his father is. He spills his blood onto the lock, and the door to Doomsday opens. Seg realizes that Dru is not only Lyta’s son but his as well.

Doomsday Troubles

Jax-Ur continues to torture Daron. And out of that, she gets the passcode to the “Varo Protocol,” a mysterious set-up that Daron organized in the Genesis chambers.

Meanwhile, Dru may have managed to open the vault but, Doomsday was long gone. Jayna (Ann Ogbomo) had forewarned Seg about Dru’s plans. However, it seems that moving Doomsday was a mistake. Nyssa calls Seg over to their location. And Raika (Sonita Henry) reports that Doomsday’s containment safe is failing. The minimum time they have before Doomsday wakes up is hours. Luckily, Seg has dear old grandpa at his beck and call for help.

In Black Zero’s compound, Daron tries to beg for his freedom from his guard. He tries to bribe the young man with the Voice of Rao’s money but, in the end, the young man outright refused. However, Daron’s nifty hands managed to get the key to his door in their brief struggle.

Speaking of traitors, Seg and Nyssa turn around to find the Cythonites guns pointed at them. It seems that Raika and her people have changed their minds. They now aim to take Doomsday to Kandor and unleash the beast there. So, when Brainiac rips Kandor from the ground, he’ll take Doomsday with it and Krypton, and the Cythonites will be free of their burden. In lieu of the time that Seg saved her from Black Zero, Raika let Seg and Nyssa live.

They go back to the Fortress. Nyssa lightly suggests taking a skimmer and taking a break for Argao city. However, she makes her loyalty clear when she tells Seg that unlike Lyta, she believes in him. Seg thinks that she should do otherwise.

Battle of Family

Dru has had enough of waiting. For the position of who’ll lead and rebuild Kandor, Dru challenges his grandmother to a Kandorian battle to the death. Jayna immediately accepts. The fight is fierce, however, as Jayna gains the upper hand, Lyta shoots her mother on the side. Dru is furious that she stepped in. When they turn around, Jayna’s gone.

On the other hand, Daron manages to get a skimmer off the black market. He makes a mad dash out of Kandor. But, his guard informs Jax-Ur of his escape. With one click of a button, Jax-Ur sends a tremendous amount of pain to Daron’s neck. This throws his skimmer out of control and careening towards the icy murks of the Outlands.

In the Fortress, Val (Ian McElhinney) comes to comfort Seg. He tells him of the origins of the name El which means ‘Hope.’ Val tells Seg that that is what their family stands for. As long as there is an El on Krypton, there will always be hope. This leads Seg to leap back into action. As they look back into the Voice’s previous moves, they realize that he’s sucking power to pull Brainiac’s ship towards Krypton. And there’s only one place left with enough power that he can tap into aside from the Genesis chamber: the generator of Kandor’s protective dome.

Nyssa goes to convince Dar-Om to help. Though he agrees to lend a helping hand, he also promises to crush Black Zero once everything was over. The same promises go down with Seg’s negotiation with Black Zero. Everything will be back to normal after they defeat the Voice.

The Inevitable Fall

Jayna tries her utmost best to get back to Kandor through the catacombs. However, her injury is becoming worse by the minute, and she inevitably falls to the ground. Suddenly, a man appears out of the shadows and comes to her aid, calling out her name. The man lifts his hood and seems to be Jayna’s brother whom she left in the Outlands. (Could he really be?) Nevertheless, the man takes Jayna away.

Back in Kandor, Jax-Ur and a small team of men head to the Genesis chamber. She overrides the “Varo Protocol” through Daron’s passcode. With this, she opens up a hidden portion of the great chamber where hundreds of clones of the elite lie in waiting. Daron’s betrayal proved to be even greater than Jax-Ur has imagined.

Down by the gates of the generator, Seg, the Sagitarii, and Black Zero have gathered. Though the animosity is obvious, the two enemies managed to agree on one thing: to defeat Brainiac. Before Seg goes into the chamber, he gives Nyssa the El sandstone. He asks her to take a skimmer and go to Argao city if everything else fails.

Seg and his little army find the Voice just where they thought he’d be. However, they’re in for a surprise when the Voice manages to control them, egging them onto each other. It didn’t take long before one blaster went off and the others followed. Soon, there was no one left alive but Seg.

Back in the catacombs, Lyta and her son are still trying to find Doomsday. But, since they had little hope of finding the beast, Dru suggests someone else who might know how to stop Brainiac: Val-El. Lyta tells him that the old El is dead but, Dru says otherwise.

Krypton’s Sandstone of Hope

After leading the others to slaughter each other, the Voice turns his attention to Seg. The Voice lifts him up through some mind force and examines him for a moment. Then he sends him in the direct path towards Krypton’s force field power. Before Seg hits the lethal wave, Nyssa comes up behind the Voice and stabs him with the sandstone. This saves Seg and causes the Voice to explode.

Nyssa immediately tends to Seg. And the two of them share a kiss. However, their moment was disrupted when the city’s force field power source started diminishing. The force field went down along with it. As they’re retreating, Seg and Nyssa glimpse the Voice’s body beginning to reform itself. Seg grabs the sandstone, and they run. The sentry’s body reforms. And Brainiac’s mini-me rises out of the ruin. He looks out over Krypton and once again declares the planet as his own.

“Krypton” continues next Wednesday, May 23rd, with the Season 1 finale, titled “The Phantom Zone” at 10/9c on SyFy.
