'Krypton' Series Finale 'The Alpha And The Omega' Recap: Better Tomorrow

From last episode’s pit of loss and misery, Krypton’s Season 2 finale is a shining beacon of victory. Not only is it a victory for the rebellion, but it’s also a spectacular victory for the show in itself for presenting such a wickedly good season. Unfortunately for all the good the show presents, Krypton is facing down a heartbreaking, bitter, and greatly unjust end. Syfy has opted to cancel Krypton along with Lobo’s spinoff series. And now, we’re left with hopes falling faster than the man of steel can fly.

Despite the news, however, these past two seasons have been one great, epic ride. And this week’s finale episode is just a demonstration of that. Nyssa (Walis Day) hightails off to another planet. Seg (Cameron Cuffe) duels Zod (Colin Salmon) and makes some spectacular tributes to the man of steel. Adam (Shaun Sipos) finally gets his jetpack. God damn Lobo (Emmett J. Scanlan) gets to Krypton. And guess who’s headed to Earth to probably and completely mess up some timelines? This episode is just bonkers! It’s not as majorly action-packed as previous episodes but, it has all the juicy details that could’ve lasted us so many more seasons. So, let’s enjoy this piece of a fucking great TV show before we just let our imaginations take over.

Taking the War Home

Doomsday’s assault on the rebels was the final straw for Val (Ian McElhinney). After escaping Wegthor, he contacts Zod. And this time, Val’s the one who makes the threats. He also welcomes any counter-threats Zod spews out before crisply and satisfyingly calling him an asshole. Meanwhile, Nyssa tries to comfort Adam whose legs are now paralyzed. In somewhat of a drugged stupor, Adam babbles on about the Zeta Beam. It’s from Sardath and its default destination is Sardath’s home, Rann. And though it was originally just intended for space travel, Adam tweaked it a bit to include time travel. Before Nyssa could respond to his chattiness, Adam falls asleep.

Later on, Seg contacts Val. He delivers the news of Kem’s (Rasmus Hardiker) death and sacrifice. And they make plans to meet in the Outlands where Lyta (Georgina Campbell) and the others are. Moments after, Adam wakes up to find that Nyssa has taken his Zeta Beam. Her desperation to find her son has gotten to her. And despite anything that Val or Adam says, she hightails off to Rann.

Meanwhile, in the Outlands, Jayna (Ann Ogbomo) and Dev (Aaron Pierre) mourn over what happened on Wegthor thinking everybody was dead. This ultimately brings them closer to one another and the two share a kiss before Lyta’s approach interrupts them. Lyta is devastated upon hearing the news. But, she refuses to give up and instead devices another plan to take on Zod with the help of the few Sagitarii they managed to recruit. Their mourning doesn’t last long, however, as Zod’s ship lands just outside the building.

Regrouping

Back in Kandor, Zod has gotten his hands on Sagitarii Thur (Saif Al-Warith), the Sagitarii Lyta managed to turn on Zod. Through a couple of meetings, Zod manages to get the location of the rebel’s base in the Outlands. And he commands Commander Dahl (Shane Lennon) to send troops to the area before executing Thur.

In the Outlands, the rebels find a moment to mourn Kem’s sacrifice. But, with the pressing issue in front of them, they have to continue fighting. Unfortunately, Lyta’s spies have been caught. Zod is dealing with them one by one. So, now they’re on their own. With the remaining rebel forces now in one place, Seg and Lyta establish a plan. Engage Zod’s forces in the Outlands. And draw him out in Kandor. Jayna worries about the innocent stowaways but, at that moment, these men step up and volunteer to join the fight as well.

Unfortunately, Adam has to sit this plan out. As Val settles him in a separate bunker, Adam begs not to be benched. He’s not just fighting for Superman now. Krypton is his home now too. And everyone he’s been with – Seg, Val, Kem – they were the closest thing he’s known of a family. And he intends to fight with them. However, Val convinces him that he’s done so much more than enough for them already. And he’ll make sure to make it up for Adam in time just not with this fight.

Reclaiming Krypton

As Zod’s Sagitarii forces battle the rebels in the Outlands, Seg and Lyta head to Kandor. In front of all Kryptonians, Seg brazenly calls out Zod for his tyranny. And as they thought, it brought Zod out in the open. He counters Seg’s proclamation. But, it’s deemed futile when Lyta steps out into the open and reveals the truth of what Zod did to her. Zod tries to make the people see that all he’s doing is for Krypton’s survival. But, as Seg said surviving and living are two different things. And what Zod’s offering is not good enough.

Zod orders his Sagitarii to arrest Lyta and Seg. But, Commander Dahl steps up and tells him to arrest them himself. Zod tries to command the rest of his men but, they all proceed to lay down their weapons. Despite this humiliation, Zod refuses to back down. To spare him from further embarrassment, Seg challenges him in a duel using Christopher Reeves’ iconic line “General, would you care to step outside?”

Alone, Seg finds trouble beating his son. But, as soon as Zod pulls out a knife, Lyta jumps into the fight. Together, they take Zod down. And it’s Seg who delivers the final blow that renders the General unconscious. After Zod’s defeat, Commander Dahl orders the regimens in the Outlands to retreat. With no other way to contain Zod, Lyta and Seg decide to put him under the influence of the Black Mercy where he dreams of conquering Earth with both his parents at his side.

Taste of Victory

While Seg and the others are battling Zod in Krypton, Nyssa is trying to find her way in Rann. Along the path, she finds a group of people burnt to death. One of them has survived long enough to warn her of something in the sky. But no words were exchanged to help Nyssa understand what it is. Further along, Nyssa finds an omega symbol drawn on a rock with blood. Just as she turns around, shadows fall on her. And she looks up to see a battalion of what looks like parademons up in the sky.

Back in Krypton, the rebels are celebrating their victory. However, Val has detected some high heat signatures near a cluster of meteors that fell in the Outlands. When Dev and Jayna check it out, they find something ugly lying underneath the ice: Doomsday. Meanwhile, Val has given Adam his jetpack. And though he can’t feel shit on his legs, the bastard can definitely fly. Seg decides to leave them to their drunken fun and by the side, he finds an unexpected guest. Lobo.

As expected, Lobo ups the humor of these last moments of the finale. And after a little awkward exchange with Seg, Lobo asks for his help on finding Brainiac. Seg hears Lobo’s explanation before he finally agrees on the condition that Lobo helps him get back Jor-El as well. While all this is happening in Krypton, Brainiac is taking very good care of little Jor as they make their way to the planet Zod didn’t get to – Earth.

Krypton Season 2 Overall Verdict

Krypton’s cancelation comes as a huge disappointment with how things ended this season. There was so much more for the series to explore. And there was so much more to the story that it didn’t get to tell. However, that doesn’t change that these past two seasons have been wonderfully spectacular, amazing, and quite unforgettable.

Season 2 has especially upped the standards for any superhero tv show. The writing, the acting, the directing, the accuracy, the visual effects—they all made one of the most enjoyable spinoffs that I’ve watched in a while. As I’ve said for almost every episode of the season, THIS is how you make a superhero TV show. Each line, scene, visual marvel, and tribute all worked collectively to make this amazing show.

What’s also amazing is that through each episode, the dedication of the cast and crew bleeds through the screen. It’s this commitment that absolutely made the storytelling so much better. Everyone, absolutely everyone, played their part so well to make Krypton truly unforgettable. And despite this abrupt and heartbreaking ending, there is still a victory for this great show. Maybe it’s up to our imaginations now to see this tale to the end but, Krypton will live on. As creator Cameron Welsh said in his tribute message, “the story of Krypton is not how we died, but how we lived.”
