'Reverie' Season 1, Episode 6 'Pas de Deux' Recap: Lost Dreams

Life is not free of tragedy. In some occasions, tragedy itself brings life to specific events. Perhaps this is the reason why some people misuse the Reverie. When faced with trouble, our natural response would be to either fight back or evade it. In some cases, fighting back is not part of the solution, at least not literally. Because of this, the Reverie becomes an escape, and the team is determined not to let anyone else die while using it.

In this week’s episode of Reverie, Mara Kint (Sarah Shahi) attempts to rescue Holly Maxwell (Sally Pressman), a former ballet dancer whose career ended after a tragic bike accident. While working on the case, Mara reunites with her former lover, Holly’s psychiatrist Chris (Sam Jaeger). Realizing that she has unfinished business, Mara decides to pay a visit to an unexpected patient.

Holly’s sister, Vivian, takes care of her when she became stuck in the program for over 16 hours. This situation could be fatal to Holly’s condition. Because of this, the Oniratech team decides to try to convince her to leave the program. However, at each attempt, Mara comes up with new information that did not make any sense. Eventually, Mara uses the information she gathered to resolve Holly’s reasons for not leaving finally.

Holly’s accident stole everything she wanted in life from her. She developed paraplegia. Also, Holly lost the ability to become pregnant as well as her and her ex-boyfriend, Zeke Caridis’ (Kane Lieu), unborn child. What convinced Holly to leave was when Mara tells her that her sister, Vivian, is sick, too. Before Holly woke up, she had one last request: to dance with her daughter, Sadie Maxwell (Ireland Richards). After recovering, Holly works with Vivian at her dance studio. She may not be able to dance again, but she will be teaching the future generations of ballet dancers.

Holly’s situation was very emotional. It was in every bit similar to Mara’s PTSD but in a completely different way. Mara’s greatest strength is her relatability. Her personality, as well as her experiences, make her highly efficient in her work. The way Mara’s character handles everything without getting too involved emotionally is admirable.

Because of Chris’ involvement in the case, Mara had numerous run-ins with him. At some point, they almost kiss. However, Mara was not yet ready. Also, Chris was still not over how Mara left him hanging. We may see more of their relationship as the episodes progress. Since Mara promised to call Chris when she is ready, this could mean that Chris has a more significant role in the series.

Another character makes a return at the end of the episode. After Mara and Chris’ goodbye, Mara goes to a hospital. At first, it was unclear as to what Mara was doing there. But when the flashbacks started previewing, we instantly knew who it was. Mara’s brother-in-law, Ray Mc-Conley was in a coma after he shot himself. There is no telling what Mara was going to do.

Reverie continues Wednesday, July 18th, with “The Black Mandala” at 10/9c on NBC.
