'Reverie' Season 1, Episode 5 'Altum Somnum' Recap: Terror Attack [SPOILERS]

This time around, Reverie two different social issues together. It is always best to maintain an open mind while watching the show. At first, the plot seems to deceive the viewers into thinking that it was simple. However, the second social issue adds more of a variety to how the narrative goes. The protagonist’s flexible yet untainted morality is highly remarkable. Perhaps if more people had the same attitude, solutions to some of the world’s most significant problems would be attainable.

In this week’s episode of Reverie, the aftermath of the bombing at the Mercodyne building sends the Reverie 2.0 team into an unexpected mission given by Monica Shaw (Kathryn Morris). Paul Hammond (Sendhil Ramamurthy) has the developers work double time to recreate the incident while Mara Kint talks to the sole survivor of the attack. Meanwhile, Charlie Ventana (Dennis Haysbert) and Alexis Barrett (Jessica Lu) go on the field to gather information.

A man with a briefcase (Steve Rizzo) makes a phone call when suddenly, an explosion from the inside of the Mercodyne building sends him tumbling into the air. Hours later at the Oniratech HQ, Monica has Charlie gather the team members in his office. The team is surprised when they find out that Monica was not just an investor, she works for the Department of Defense. Also, Monica shows them a video. The team is reluctant to help Monica. However, when Mara says that she is willing to help, they began to work immediately. Alexis does necessary changes to the code while Paul gathers the developers to work on recreating the building. When they finish, Mara does the rest of the work. The survivor’s name was Denise Lang (Ashleigh LaThrop). She works as a security guard in Mercodyne.

As Mara enters the program, she sees an exit marker that was too noticeable, so she covers it up. She meets Denise there, who is unsure of what is happening. Meanwhile, Charlie talks to Monica about her sudden intrusion. Monica states that it was part of their deal, so they had to help her. Mara secretly follows Denise when she meets Silas who has an undeveloped face, making Denise panic.

When Mara exits the program, the team finds out that Denise was using a false identity. Her real name was Ashley Trent. The team could not let that case go since Silas was still at large and the bombs posed a threat to innocent lives. Because of this, Mara had to go back to the program and try to talk Ashley into revealing the location of the other bombs. She just needed to know more about Ashley.

Mara talks to Ashley’s mom and their conversation was insightful as well as emotional. She finds out about Ashley’s tragic childhood. Also, she had anger management issues she could not conquer and that she has not seen Mrs. Trent in over a year. Mara enters Charlie’s office and comes up with a plan to get Ashley to talk to her, so they test it out.

Disguised as Edith, Mara enters the program. Ashley finds relief in Edith’s presence then she shows her a door. The door led to a cabin in the middle of a forest. Mara pretends not to see it after she points it out to her. Suddenly, Ashley collapses. Mara talks to Paul about what she saw. Paul says that Ashley’s mind was making a sort of refuge for her since it was in a state of disarray.

Back at her bedside, Ashley’s mom tells Mara that the doctors took her off the ventilator. Mara mentions the cabin Ashley found to Mrs. Trent. It turns out that their family made it during the times that they were still together. After hearing all of Mrs. Trent’s stories, Mara realizes that Ashley was just a lost soul, longing for a sense of belonging. She returns to the program once more, determined to tell her the truth.

Mara apologizes to Ashley for lying. Ashley is devastated when Mara tells her the truth about what was happening. She was dying, and she felt it. After expressing her sadness over how Silas used to make her think, Ashley reveals the location of the other bomb to Mara. Ashley had a final request before Mara left. As the program started to fall apart, Mara ran to the exit point and made it out in time.

Mrs. Trent cries at Ashley’s bedside. Mara comforts her, saying that Ashley used the last moments of her life to save others. Mara grant’s Ashley’s request. She wanted Mrs. Trent to know that her “Ladybug” loves her. Also, she asked Mara to read an excerpt of their favorite book, Alice in Wonderland.

Interpersonal

When Alexis storms out of the discussion room, Charlie follows after her. He decides to Alexis with him while they work on a lead that could give them insight about Ashley. Charlie drives to Edith Leonard (Alison Rood), Ashley’s friend’s house. A woman opens the door for them. She proceeds to fetch Edith who was napping. Charlie asks for her name, and she hesitantly says, Margaret. He knew that she was Edith, so they entered the house.

Alexis finds photos of Ashley that she used on fake I.D.s, so Charlie searches the house. They catch Edith who was trying to escape through her backyard. When she could not avoid them, she rambles about their cause before she kills herself. When the case is finally done, Charlie enters Alexis’ office and thanks her for what she did. Before he left, he tells Alexis that she can talk to him anytime. Alexis smiles, thanking him.
