'The Conners' Season 1, Episode 7 'Hold The Salt' Recap: Relationships

The Conners sorted out their new family dynamic. Now, they have to deal with relationships. Often, dating an unemployed person has some risks. Also, dating your boss is risky, too. After a series of unsolicited advice, the Conner women decide the fate of their relationships for themselves.

In this week’s episode of The Conners, Dan Conner (John Goodman) starts to question Jackie Harris’ (Laurie Metcalf) new boyfriend, Peter’s (Matthew Broderick) motives for dating her. Meanwhile, Darlene Conner (Sara Gilbert) receives advice from the least expected people: her sister, Becky Conner (Lecy Goranson) and Blue (Juliette Lewis), her ex-husband’s current girlfriend. Finally, Darlene decides the fate of her new relationship with her boss, Ben (Jay R. Ferguson).

Since it is Christmas season, Jackie buys Peter a gift: a vintage Italian motorcycle. However, the bike was not in running condition, so Jackie asks Dan to repair it for them. Still, Dan refuses to fix it since not only does he not repair Foreign bikes, he also disliked Peter. After some urging, Dan agrees to do it anyway.

Later that day, Peter approached Dan to give him a cheque for the parts he would need. However, as Dan notices that the check is from Peter and Jackie’s joint account, he insults him and airs out his sentiments. As soon as Dan comes home, Jackie confronts him, telling him not to meddle with their relationship.

Darlene receives advice from the least expected persons. First, Becky tells her to be careful with dating someone whose personality is similar to hers. Then, after her dinner with Ben did not turn out so well, she meets Blue, who told her to trust him and give him a second chance. Eventually, Ben and Darlene decide to trust each other and see if their relationship would work. As the day ended, Harris Conner-Healy (Emma Kenney) asks Jackie and Darlene for relationship advice, both equally groaning as they shared their experiences.

This chapter of The Conners shows us how complicated relationships get, regardless of your age. Economically, sharing your account with your partner is not a reasonable course of action unless you are married. Also, relationships within the workplace do not usually work out. Still, taking the risk is worth a shot, since the only thing worse than making one is not taking one at all.

The Conners returns on Tuesday, December 11th with ‘O Sister Where Art Thou?’ at 8/9c on ABC.
