'The Flash' Season 4, Episode 10 'The Trial of The Flash' Recap: A Speedy Trial [SPOILERS]

“The Flash” is the fastest man alive, so it’s only fair his trial only lasts one episode. If you recall during the Winter Finale, Barry (Grant Gustin) got framed for murder. The Thinker orchestrated a very complicated framing of Barry for Clifford Devoe. Now, Joe (Jesse L. Martin) and Iris (Candice Patton) must decide how far are they are willing to go to keep Barry out of prison. But it’s going to be hard when The Mechanic takes the stand, and the prosecution is hell-bent on sending Barry to jail. Meanwhile, there’s a new Metahuman in town.

‘The Flash’ is an innocent man

At the beginning of Season 4, Barry escaped the Speed Force as a madman. He was scribbling nonsense and screaming he didn’t murder anyone. If you connect the dots, Barry anticipated this but has no recollection of ever saying it. Luckily, Team Flash kept the video. Not only are they looking into defending Barry but also other side effects of the Speed Force. For the meantime, it’s court day. Cecille (Danielle Nicolet) is defending Barry while Anton Slater (Mark Valley) prosecutes him. You have to give props to the man, as he was entirely convincing in implying  Barry as a corrupt and murderous forensic scientist.
Cecille, on the other hand, tries to paint a picture of Barry as we know him—the kind-hearted young man. So it seems advantageous when the prosecution asked Captain David Singh (Patrick Sabongui) to take the stand. But Anton came swooping in, twisting David’s relationship with Barry and recalling unauthorized leaves and the restraining order against Devou. All hope seems lost, so Cecille offers Barry and Iris two options: one was to ask for a plea deal with a shorter sentence or to plead insanity. Barry disagreed with both since it would only make him look guilty. Cecille then gave him another option since it seems like an impossible case to win with all the evidence stacked against him—Barry has to admit to the court he was The Flash.

You Frame Barry; We Frame You

All is fair in the court unless you’re a cheating spouse. When it looks like Anton is digging Barry a grave, Joe and Ralph (Hartley Sawyer) decide to create a little evidence themselves. Since The Thinker and The Mechanic placed enough evidence to convict Barry, Joe needs to find something that would point to another suspect. Then, as if luck was on their side, they caught The Mechanic locking lips with Dominic—who was technically The Thinker in another body, but the court wouldn’t know that. Back in the Courthouse, The Mechanic was playing the grieving wife correctly, writing off their marriage as picture perfect until Barry murdered her husband. Cecille tries to blindside her with the photographs Joe and Ralph took of her and Dominic. But The Mechanic knew how to improvise. She not only defended the relationship with Dominic as consensual between her and Clifford but also said that he decided to make her happy.

Running out of options, Isis confronts The Mechanic, and the two get into a conversation about how far they are both willing to go for their husbands. This dilemma prompts Iris to do what Barry couldn’t admit to everyone. But Barry stops her right on time because if she tells everyone his secret, there would be a target on their backs. Joe and Ralph try to look for other ways to prove Barry is innocent. One of which includes framing The Mechanic for placing the body in Barry’s apartment. Ralph decides to let Joe see the consequences of his plan. They didn’t push through, and Cecille has no defense left for the charges against Barry.

Flash saves the day, Barry Allen goes away

While Barry is dealing with the possibility of prison time, Cisco (Carlos Valdes), Harry (Tom Cavanagh), and Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) handle another metahuman. Just because The Flash is in court doesn’t mean trouble in Central City is taking a break. This new Metahuman has very high radiation levels that’s dangerous for everyone around him. Unfortunately, he is not aware of the dangers of his powers. It looks like he isn’t even aware he has them. So it’s a surprise for him when everyone and everything looks like they’re dying in his presence. Now, he is about to explode, and Barry has no choice but to step in.

During the closing statement, Barry walks out of the courtroom to save Central City. He, along with Cisco and Killer Frost, try to stop the Metahuman from exploding. But his high radiation levels make it impossible to be anywhere near him. So Barry decides to create a vacuum around the new Metahuman to contain the levels of radiation to avoid an explosion. He was able to save the day, but in court, the jury found him guilty. Barry reassures the team everything will be okay. He was sentenced to life without parole but despite his sentence, Central City praised The Flash for his many acts of heroism.
“The Flash” returns next Tuesday, January 23rd, with “The Elongated Knight Rises” at 8/7c on The CW.
