'The Gifted' Season 1, Episode 6 'got your siX' Recap: Preparing for a Fight [SPOILERS]

The Mutant Underground is done playing games in episode 6 of “The Gifted” Season 1, titled “got your siX.” Thunderbird is determined to find out what happened to his friend Pulse and other mutants brainwashed by the Sentinel Services. He sends Marcos, Reed, and Andy to infiltrate the Federal building. Meanwhile, Polaris is training mutant refugees for a fight but Amy isn’t too happy about it.  The X-Men have warned Thunderbird about a fight coming their way. But perhaps training the others isn’t such a bad idea, especially with Sentinel Services determined to hunt them down with whatever means necessary.

Strucker Father-Son Bonding

After finding out their good friend Pulse has turned to the other side, the Mutant Underground seeks answers. But they gained very little information from Agent Jace Turner’s memories. They’ve only got bits and pieces. But with Reed on their side, he recognizes a building amongst the pictures Dreamer gave them. He tells them its where some of his mutant clients are sent but he knows very little of what they actually do there. Thunderbird and Marcos hatch a plan to infiltrate the Federal building in Baton Rouge and steal their mutant files.

It sounds easy enough when they have Blink who can create a portal. But after finding out what Dreamer did to her memories and Johnny going along with it, she leaves the mutant underground. Andy offers to help. At first reluctant, Reed agrees, seeing that his son wants to prove himself. He also uses it as a way of bonding with Andy despite their circumstance. Marcos, Reed, and Andy board a storage truck taking them to the Federal Building. However, along the way they face a few obstacles. The truck was stopped by a couple of policemen but luckily Marcos was able to hide them when the police checked the truck. But their trouble doesn’t stop there. They underestimated the security of the Federal building, leaving them no choice but to hit them in the parking lot. Not a safe or fool-proof plan, but Andy was able to break the wall entering the Federal building. Marcos and Reed were able to get a few documents before getting caught.

Polaris enlists a few mutant teens and tweens for training. The X-Men are absent and so is the Academy, leaving no choice for mutants to train their powers. Seeing that the Mutant Underground is gaining more than its fair share of mutant runaways, Polaris saw it as a way to gain more fighters. But Amy doesn’t allow it, especially with Lauren as one of Polaris’ trainees. Upset over her mother’s views, she seeks comfort with a new mutant named Wes. But the training proved to be a good idea after all when the truck was being chased by the police.
On the way back from Baton Rouge, Reed, Marcos, and Andy find themselves in a police ambush. Lauren volunteers herself and Wes to help Polaris with the escape route. Wes has the power to create an illusion that would help steer the cops away from the truck’s next direction. Meanwhile, Lauren can help the truck drive over the barricade. It was also a teaching moment for Polaris, helping the two teens properly control their powers in times of need. The plan was a success and they were able to deliver the documents safely to the Mutant Underground.

Thunderbird Spearheading The Good Fight

In the opening of the episode, we find out a little bit more about Johnny a.k.a Thunderbird before joining the mutant underground.  It was after the 7/15 tragedy and Johnny, along with other veterans, are raising money for the victims. Johnny is more than the tracker and leader of the Mutant Underground. He also served the country in Afghanistan, but that doesn’t mean anything to humans because all they see is a mutant asking money to help other mutants. This leads to a group of humans throwing a bomb at the cause, quite literally. Johnny was able to save a few people and his fellow veterans. But it looks like this memory still haunts Johnny, who only wants to protect everyone.

He starts to question his leadership and if the X-Men made a mistake of choosing him to lead the Mutant Underground. Johnny also regrets leaving Pulse at the hands of Sentinel Services. It starts to take a toll on him when Blink left. But Dreamer comforts him and tells him he is a great leader, hoping to prove it herself and for Johnny to not have any more blood on his hands. He and Dreamer scour through the stolen documents finding out how Sentinel Services were able to get mutants to turn on fellow mutants.
The episode ends with Jace determined to capture the Mutant Underground. Meanwhile, Marcos receives a phone call from his ex-girlfriend asking for his due.
“The Gifted,” continues next Monday with “eXtreme measures” at 9/8c on FOX.
