'The Gifted' Season 2, Episode 2 'unMoored' Recap: Family

A new beginning finally arrived in The Gifted. However, it comes at a great price. As loose ends tie up and training begins, the remnants of the Mutant Underground continue to struggle to live. With limited resources and the constant need to hide, the Mutants must scrounge up what they can to help them in their fight against the Inner Circle.

In this week’s episode of The Gifted, Caitlin Strucker (Amy Acker), Eclipse/Marcos Diaz (Sean Teale), and Thunderbird/John Proudstar (Blair Redford) seek out help from an old ally. Meanwhile, Andy (Percy Hynes White) and Lauren Strucker (Natalie Alyn Lind) have shared dreams. While the vision distracts Andy from training, Lauren struggles with their family’s current state.

Because of the sudden power grid failure due to Lorna Dane/Polaris’ (Emma Dumont) birth, The Inner Circle’s secrecy is at risk. As a result, Reeva Payge (Grace Byers) sends the Frost Sisters (Skyler Samuels) along with Fade (Jeff Daniel Phillips) and Bulk (Renes Rivera) to eliminate any potential information leak. Esme seemed to be reluctant at first, but she went along with her sisters anyway. However, she had her revenge at Sophie and Phoebe when she spoiled their fun as they killed off the munitions building’s manager.

Months after his resignation from Sentinel services, Jace Turner (Coby Bell) and his wife, Paula Turner (Frances Turner) start their life over. Jace has a new job at a Law firm, and all was running well until he starts to connect the power grid failure to Polaris. At first, this makes him turn back to his obsession with mutants. Fortunately, he realized how his conspiracy would cost him his future and marriage, so he throws his files on the mutants away.

Flashbacks in the episode reveal Thunderbird’s beginnings in the Mutant Underground, and how he met Evangeline Whedon (Erinn Ruth), the mutant lawyer who recruited him into the cause. One of his main problems before becoming the Mutant Underground’s leader was his addiction to pain pills. Evangeline helped Thunderbird overcome his addiction in the most unconventional way: chaining him to a bed.

Years later, Thunderbird reunites with her in a time of dire need. While she refuses to help them at first, she eventually gives him a contact number to someone who could help him. Also, she apologized for giving him a cause doomed to fail. Meanwhile, Blink/Clarice Fong (Jamie Chung) and Lauren help Christina (Danube Hermosillo) reunite with her sister, Jazmine (Mia Ella Clyburn).

For The Family

Before Caitlin went with Thunderbird and Eclipse to see Evangeline, she fought with her husband, Reed (Stephen Moyer). Andy’s decision to leave tore their family apart, and their relationship as husband and wife hung on a thread. As this happened, Reed’s power manifestation became stronger than ever.

Reed tries to reach out to Lauren, but it only ends up in an argument. While Reed and Caitlin argued about Andy’s decision to leave, Lauren was left alone to deal with her remorse, knowing that she killed fifteen people. Also, the fact that neither Reed nor Caitlin ever mentioned anything about the incident angered her.

While waiting for Reed and Lauren to arrive, Caitlin decided to get some air. Moments later, Eclipse joins her with a bottle of champagne. Despite the baby and Polaris’ absence, the birth is still something he chose to celebrate, albeit alone. As they stood there, Caitlin encouraged him not to give up on finding them.

When Caitlin left, Eclipse broke the bottle of champagne as he finished drinking. The shattered glass made him remember a time with Lorna, so he shined a light through the container’s broken bottom towards the night sky. Back in her room Lorna sees this and tries to wake Dawn up; then she realizes that Dawn is sick, so she calls out for help.

The Gifted continues on Tuesday, October 9th with ‘coMplications’ at 8/9c on Fox.
