'The Gifted' Season 2, Episode 5 'afterMath' Recap: Identity

Nothing can stop the Inner Circle’s plans. When numerous Mutant Refugees find themselves displaced, the Mutant Underground steps in to find them a place to stay. Meanwhile, the Inner Circle’s newest member seems reluctant to act. However, once set free from her shell, she becomes an invaluable asset to the cause. Before they knew it, The Gifted has to deal with a new threat hot on their heels.

In this week’s episode of The Gifted, Andy Strucker (Percy Hynes White) helps Rebecca (Anjelica Bette Fellini) feel at home after rescuing her from the Mental Asylum. Meanwhile, Clarice Fong/Blink (Jamie Chung) and Marcos Diaz/Eclipse ask Erg (Michael Luwoye) to house the Mutant Refugees. As this happens, The Purifiers, led by Jace Turner (Coby Bell), look for the Mutants-at-large.

Lauren Strucker (Natalie Alyn Lind) regains consciousness as John Proudstar/Thunderbird (Blair Redford) brings her into the clinic. After Caitlin Strucker (Amy Acker) checks on Lauren, Reed Strucker (Stephen Moyer) brings Lauren home. Despite the Clinic’s busyness, Caitlin manages to call Reed once he and Lauren left the clinic. After Reed reassures Caitlin, he and Lauren watched as the news shows the influx of Pro-Mutant protests broadcast on TV, sparked by the Inner Circle’s activities.

Despite his failing marriage, Jace Turner continues to pursue the Mutant Underground. After being contacted by The Purifiers, Jace attends one of their meetings. He becomes instrumental in changing The Purifiers’ tactics; proposing a raid on the mutant-friendly clinics. Because of this, he almost comes head to head with the Mutant Underground. However, the police arrive in time to stop the chaos. Still, Jace finds patient files that leads him and The Purifiers straight to the Mutant Underground’s home.

Seeking Refuge

Since the Mutant Underground could not house the Mutant Refugees, Blink and Eclipse decide to ask for Erg’s help. At first, Erg was reluctant to accept the mutants. However, he eventually agrees to house them under certain conditions. First, Blink had to help him steal supplies for them, going against her principles. Second, mutants that could pass as human needed to have the letter ‘M’ branded on their faces. Regardless of Blink and Eclipse’s opinion, the Mutant Refugees accepted these conditions, thinking that it is better than being imprisoned in the Mental Asylum.

After the Inner Circle rescues her from the Mental Asylum, Rebecca barely talked to anyone for days. However, Andy saw through the Frost Sisters’ (Skyler Samuels) approach towards her. Because of this, Andy decided to get to know Rebecca. His efforts bring them great results as Rebecca shows Andy her powers. Once they arrive back at the headquarters, Rebecca enthusiastically asks them about the mission. Still, Lorna Dane/Polaris did not feel right about Rebecca.

‘The Gifted’ Season 2, Episode 5 ‘afterMath’ Final Verdict

Amy Acker and Stephen Moyer in The Gifted

Guy D’Alema/FOX

This episode of The Gifted pushes the Mutant Underground to their limits. The second season started rough, and after each chapter, the main characters face nothing but one problem after the other. The show maintains the ominous character that the Inner Circle portrays, making them mysterious as they are logically formidable. Still, with the influx of new mutants, I hope that the Mutant Underground finally gets a fighting chance against the Inner Circle. With everything that is going on, the show undoubtedly captivated the audience more than ever.

The Gifted continues on Tuesday, November 7th with ‘iMprint’ at 8/9c on Fox.
