'The Purge' Season 1, Episode 8 'Giving Time Is Here' Recap: True Colors

Heading back to safety during The Purge is no easy task. Often, traps set by purgers as well as lurking purgers everywhere make this quite difficult. Still, there are a few people who offer sanctuary in these dark times. However, you may never know the ones who you can genuinely trust.

In this week’s episode of The Purge, Lila Stanton (Lili Simmons) deals with Jenna Betancourt’s (Hannah Emily Anderson) rejection. Meanwhile, Miguel (Gabriel Chavarria) and Penelope (Jessica Garza) seek refuge in Pete The Cop’s (Dominic Fumusa) bar. When Pete tells the truth about Good Leader Taviss (Fiona Dourif), Penelope decides to rescue her friends before it is too late.

During Miguel and Penelope’s stay at his bar, Pete tells Penelope the truth about Good Leader Taviss. At first, Penelope did not accept Pete’s story. However, once Pete mentions how Taviss gets funding from the NFFA to look for people they deem useless, Penelope realizes that Pete is right. While trouble stirred inside the bar, Penelope calls one of her friends from the Cult. The bus shows up along with Taviss, and she and Penelope have their last encounter. That is until Joe (Lee Tergesen) shows up and kills Taviss, then abducts Penelope.

Flashbacks in the episode reveal that Lila made her first kill on her 18th birthday. From the start, Lila never was anything different from her parents after all. At present, Lila bitterly dealt with Jenna’s rejection. Because of this, she tries to get rid of Rick (Colin Woodell) numerous times but fails. Lastly, Lila resorts to violence; hitting Rick with a cricket bat. However, the very person she wanted to be with killed her. As the couple tried to calm themselves, their house’s security system deactivates. Moments later, Rick finds himself bound in chains with his mouth taped, watching Joe drag Jenna out of the house.

Joe decides to head to Pete’s bar. In there, he makes friends with Miguel as he contemplates his next move. Surprisingly, Joe was no hero. Instead, he was like any who celebrated the holiday, albeit in his way. Now, Joe has Jane Barbour (Amanda Warren), Rick and Jenna, Penelope, and three other people we thought he rescued, heading to an unknown destination.

The plot twist, in the end, was unexpected. Also, the writers skillfully developed these characters’ seemingly separate lives. This chapter perfectly captures what The Purge could be like in real life. With only two episodes left, this one pushed the fans to the edge of their seats.

The Purge continues on Tuesday, October 30th with ‘I Will Participate’ at 10/9c on the USA Network.
