'This Is Us' Season 2, Episode 10 (Fall Finale): Randall Makes a Tough Decision to Let Go, Kevin Gets Arrested [SPOILERS]

As promised, the latest episode for “This Is Us” Season 2 focuses on Number Three, Randall Pearson. Just when we think all is well with Randall the past two episodes, he’s been facing his own problems—particularly with his foster daughter, Deja.

Randall’s Toughest Decision, Shauna Demands for Deja

Just when the father-daughter relationship between Randall and his step-daughter Deja start to improve, something knocks at the door to disrupt them. Or in this case, it comes shouting at their doorstep, getting all ‘in your face’ with Mrs. Beth Pearson.

To everyone’s surprise, here comes Deja’s biological mother, Shauna, looking free as a bird demanding her child to come home with her. Apparently, charges had been dropped and she’s a free woman. And when Randall steps in to solve this nightmare-come-alive, Deja sees her mother just in time and calms her down. This is a very odd scene because instead of up and going with her mother, Deja seems to be relaxed—almost mature. She tells her mother that before anything happens, they both know they have to wait for Social Services to take care of the papers before she comes back to her. It’s definitely a positive sign of Deja slowly moving into maturity—something she’s learned in the Pearson household.

The very next day, both Mama and Papa Pearson attempt to do their very best to keep Deja within their custody—but because Social services believe that Shauna is responsible enough, the couple is left to eventually lose their adopted daughter. Time is scarce and the environment is tense within the home when they were counting down Deja’s final stay. And when Randall finally decides to let his foster daughter go—believing it’s for the betterment of her future—Deja didn’t hesitate to go. But on their tearful depart, the two separated in a peaceful yet disheartening state.

Flashback to Randall’s dad and his could-have-been

While Randall contemplates on his tough decision to let Deja go, he remembers a conversation he’s had with his biological father, William. Here, William reveals that on the second time Rebecca visited him, he was on the road to recovery. He had a job and decent living conditions. So he had enough courage to take Randall back.

We catch a glimpse of William’s dream—to be a part of Randall’s life while he grows up. Even if it’s just him on the sidelines, being there for celebrations like birthdays and graduation. It’s quite a heartbreaking scene. It would have changed how their lives would have turned out, but you can’t help but feel right about this dream. It’s just too precious to not let it happen, but it didn’t. And somehow, that’s how it should have always been.

Glimpse at Randall and Beth’s Next Future Foster Child

After Deja’s depart, both Beth and Randall are a little desolate. It’s a sad time for everyone. But despite this, Randall and Beth express to each other that they’re ready to welcome their home to another kid whose needing one. And this time, Randall wants a boy.
After this, we are cut to a scene in the County of Essex—so near, yet not so far—where a social services worker is talking to a handsome young boy who seems to be orphaned. She tells him they’re going to find a home soon, and it looks like it’s only a matter of time before Randall meets his new son.

Kevin’s been a wreck—but this time, he’s gone overboard. After what seems to be an episode of more drinking, he speeds on the road and gets charged for a DUI. And what’s worse, Randall’s eldest daughter Tess had been hiding in the backseat the whole time and witnesses the arrest. In other words, another very traumatizing experience for Randall and his daughter. Kevin, we’re all worried about you.
“This Is Us” returns January 2nd, 2018, at 9/8c on NBC.
