'Titans' Season Premiere Recap: Different Paths Converge

Everybody has a dark side. The Titans are no exception. Sometimes, we cannot control it. However, others give in, thinking that it is the only way to make things right. Still, some choose to suppress it. Either way, we all know that it is there; and we have to live with it.

In the season premiere of Titans, Robin makes an appearance in Detroit after disappearing for a year while Detective Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) gets a new partner after transferring to Detroit Police Department. Meanwhile, Rachel Roth/Raven (Teagan Croft) loses everything she has. As this happens, an amnesiac Kori Ander/Starfire (Anna Diop) tries to remember who she is. Elsewhere, a strange tiger (Ryan Potter) breaks into a mall.

Kori finds herself sitting beside a dead man. Their car crashed after being ambushed by armed men. Luckily, Kori escapes with her life. She finally makes it back to her hotel. An encounter with a man kept inside her closet led her to seek out Konstantin Kovar (Mark Anthony Krupa), who owned a club and is head of the Mob that tried to kill her. Once there, she finds a new objective: seek out Rachel Roth.

Rachel wakes up screaming because of a bad dream. Her mother calms her down, assuring her that she will be okay. The next morning, Rachel accidentally attacks her mother, making her rush to school. However, school treats her no different, with bullies lurking at the school bus itself. When she gets home, she watches her mother die in the hands of the man who wanted her dead, The Acolyte (Jarreth J. Merz).

Rachel escapes to Detroit, not knowing where to go next. As she sat inside a shelter for homeless people, Volunteer Sally (Shakura S’Aida) approaches her, offering her a place to stay. However, Rachel’s instincts tell her not to trust Sally, so Rachel escapes by throwing a rock at a cop car. In the precinct, she meets the person she sees in her dreams: Dick Grayson.

Differences

Detective Dick Grayson continually rejected the idea of getting a partner for months, but eventually, the Captain (Phillip Jarret) assigns Detective Amy Rohrbach (Lindsey Gort) as his partner. Dick reluctantly acknowledges her. Something else was going on in his mind.

That night, Dick went to a stakeout outside a bar, reading a file on a man who abused his daughter. As the man went to an alley for a drug exchange, Robin appears. The fight quickly ensued and before the man knew it, everyone around lay on the ground, incapacitated. He struggled to start his car, but Robin caught up to him, beating him down. Robin warned him not to touch his daughter ever again before he left.

News about Robin’s return quickly reached the press, and the mayor did not approve of Robin’s brand of justice. The police department itself unenthusiastically watched the news, thinking that Robin’s arrival would also bring a different level of crime. Before Dick could begin his work, a police officer calls him over to deal with a homeless teenage girl.

Rescue

When Dick enters the interrogation room, Rachel recognizes him immediately. At first, Dick felt threatened about how Rachel knew how his parents died. However, his cop instincts kick in once Rachel mentions her mother’s murder. Despite Rachel’s plead, Dick left the room, promising to find someone who could help her.

Dick went outside to get some air when his partner, Amy, approaches him. They have a short talk that breaks the tension between them, making her understand his situation. Sometime later, Dick receives a call from his contacts, informing him about the authenticity of Rachel’s statement. This information prompts him to look for Rachel, who disappeared from the interrogation room. As he went outside, he finds a cop car driving away with the unconscious Rachel inside.

Dick follows the car’s trail. He eliminates the fake cop who abducted Rachel. After calling out her name, he hears Rachel, desperately screaming for help. By the time Dick was close to the door, Raven kills The Acolyte. Dick enters and takes her away with him to safety.

Break In

The guard on duty did not believe what he sees in front of him. A green tiger held a game disc in its mouth. He shoots at the tiger which manages to escape. Bewildered, he stood there, contemplating what just happened. Outside, Gar morphs back to his human form, happy with what he stole.

Titans continues on Friday, October 19 at the DC Streaming Service.
