TV REVIEW: The Vampire Diaries

By Chelsea Ballinger

This Christmas in Mystic Falls didn’t quite go as plan for good friends on The Vampire Diaries. There were family reunions, more love connections, and some very depressing revelations.

Twisted Hope For Steroline?

Let’s start with the sad news first. There have been rumblings from the show creators about a major death, and it looks like that death will be Sherriff Forbes, Caroline’s mom. When spoilers revealed that Caroline would receive devastating news from Stefan, the possibility of illness or a death in the family seemed most likely. Sadly it turned out to be true. Sheriff Forbes brought Christmas to Caroline since she couldn’t come home (anti magic spell) to decorate a tree and play matchmaker for her daughter and Stefan, as she attempted to get her to forgive the good hearted brooding soul. She may have succeeded, not through her good talks, but due to the fact that Stefan had to be the one to tell Caroline that her mom is dying from a brain tumor.

This looks to be the way the Steroline relationship will transition. Stefan abandoned Caroline when she needed him the most. Now the way to prove to her that he cares might be by helping her through her mother’s illness. If you were a Buffy fan like I was, you may remember that Buffy’s mom died of an aneurysm. Stefan pointed out in the episode how they were used to losing people to supernatural causes and not to illnesses.

A Parker Family Reunion

Kai loves making grand entrances, stabbing people as way of reuniting with his sister as she treated one of his victims. Really Kai? You couldn’t just peacefully wait for her in the parking lot?

No, of course not, but thats why we love to hate you Kai! On a side note, this episode proves even more why he is a badass and why he very much needs to die. Let’s number those reasons.

  1. Because Bonnie is still stuck in 1994 and it’s starting become very depressing and upsetting to all of us.
  2. Because he is psychotic and loves to stab people.
  3. Because he makes a joke out of everything and it does not lighten the mood… but makes us laugh.
  4. He is very smart.

Number four is possibly the most important. Kai has demonstrated his smarts. Remember that while chained up to a grave in Mystic Falls he realized that the all the magic used for the anti magic spell was closer than others thought. He literally absorbed all of the magic that the travelers had left.

Hey, good news! Anti Magic spell is down so now all our favorite vamps can come back home which is probably a good thing for Caroline who probably will want to be with her mother on her last days.

Thanks Kai, but no thank you for hurting our Jo who still proved to be awesome!

Tyler, Liv, and Luke helped Kai get Jo’s knifeback from Damon but Jo wasn’t having it. Cute sister moment between Liv and Jo as Liv told her big sis that she is probably stronger than she realizes, pointing out all the awesome things she has done without magic, in addition to the fact she could take Kai in the merge off. Nevertheless, Jo absorbed her magic once Kai threatened to kill Liv. Jo is still awesome. Parker family doesn’t deserve her but Alaric does and he proves that today by supporting his woman.

Please TVD Writers, don’t kill our Jo!

Matt is trippin and Enzo needs to find something to do

Matt is literally ‘tripping,’ and Enzo might need a hobby. Jeremy pointed out how Matt was turning into Tripp, as he wanted Enzo to suffer the consequences of being a very bad vampire. Matt was almost successful too once he decided to take the Tripp route and drive Enzo through the Mystic Falls border, but too bad that was while Kai was absorbing all the traveler’s magic meaning Enzo became a jolly good fellow again. Enzo did admit to Matt that he hated Stefan because had everything he wanted. It seems he’s devoted to cutting Stefan’s hero hair off and forcing our Matty Blue Blue to come along for the ride. Our guess is that Enzo is going to dig a little deeper into the real Sarah Salvatore mystery.

Delena

Did you spot Elena gazing at a sleeping Damon while they searched for another way to save Bonnie? Caroline also admitted to Elena that it was okay if she still liked Damon because he wasn’t such a bad guy for Elena due to the whole ‘undying devotion’ thing for her. So, it seemed Elena was finally was going to give and admit to Damon that even though she couldn’t remember all the good things they had, the feelings were still there. True Love never dies folks, but Psychotic serial killers can be a b… witch?

Anywho, when Elena arrived at the Salvatore mansion (that had a mistletoe hanging, aww!) we all were thrilled when it was Damon himself who opened the door. We all leaned in for an epic kiss … but just like Elena, we were confused as to why Damon couldn’t see her. Turns out Kai put a cloaking spell on her and took out Elena with a tire iron of all things.

Another reason why we love Kai and that he needs to die. Destroying a potential Delena moment is the final strike!

Best Moment

Stefan gives Damon a Christmas slash welcome back to life present in the form of his Chevy Camaro. Loved the hug and the smile on Damon’s face when he saw his baby.

Depressing Revelation?

Every scene of Bonnie remembering when Christmas was good, leading up to her setting a Christmas Tree on fire and crying again at the revelation that she is still stuck alone in 1994. TVD writers are really torturing us with this!

This may not have been the show’s best midseason finale, but it still had its standout moments, but I’m happy to let that slide because the season kicked off with such a bang, it probably needed a breather. Judging from the promos forJanuary, it looks like we’ll get another kick in the pants with Elena held captive and Kai attempting to put the moves on Damon’s girl.

Hope you guys had a great 2014. See you in 2015 my fellow TVD Watchers!
