New 'Ant-Man and the Wasp' Trailer Introduces Villain & Confirms Goliath in the MCU

The first “Ant-Man and the Wasp” teaser trailer gave us a hint of what Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang could look like if he worked with someone with the same abilities as his suit. Enter Evangeline Lilly’s Hope van Dyne, AKA The Wasp, who was previously trapped in the Quantum Realm in the first “Ant-Man” movie. The new trailer, however, expands the narrative, this time introducing a new villain and confirming the not-so-subtle hint that Lawrence Fishburne is, after all, Goliath.

But before we dive into the details, check out the trailer below:

So who/what is “Goliath?”

First introduced in 1966’s Avengers #28, Goliath is akin to Ant-Man, but more like the reversed version of Scott’s abilities. In the comics, Goliath is a character who went through various identity changes. Of course, the first Goliath was Dr. Hank Pym himself, the inventor of the shrinking suit. Even Clint Barton, AKA Hawkeye, had a short stint of donning Goliath’s suit. Goliath can also manipulate his size and mass and also has incredible superhuman strength.

However, the most prominent Goliath character would probably be Dr. Bill Foster, which is the same person that Fishburne is playing in “Ant-Man and the Wasp.” Based on the trailer, his portrayal is very close to the comic book source, with Foster being Hank’s former lab assistant. Foster took on the mantle of Black Goliath and Giant-Man before he subsequently retired from being a superhero.

Now, it’s unclear if we’ll get to see Fishburne don the Goliath/Giant-Man suit, but it’s been teased before that he is going to be the new hero alongside “Ant-Man” and “The Wasp.” Here’s to hoping that we’ll see him fight our villain too! Oh, and speaking of villains, this leads us to…

The Ghost

This is the first time that we see a glimpse of Hannah John-Kamen’s “Ghost” in “Ant-Man and the Wasp.” Now that we know that she is the next big bad villain of the movie, here’s a brief background of her character.

Ghost was originally one of Iron Man’s formidable foes. Soon enough, Ghost joined the Thunderbolts as part of the regular team. Just like Ant-Man, The Wasp, and Goliath, Ghost has a suit of his own that allows him to turn himself invisible, including anything he touches (though it has to be one at a time). But probably one of the most impressive features of his suit is that it can also disrupt any and all electrical signals near it. These abilities make him one excellent villain to stand against “Ant-Man and the Wasp.”

Where does ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ fit in the MCU timeline post Infinity War?

Now that we’re all suffering from post-“Avengers: Infinity War” depression, it begs the question of where “Ant-Man and the Wasp” falls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. According to TheWrap, the movie will take place before the events of “Infinity War” and then slowly moves on to what Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne were busy with while Thanos was busy turning our heroes to ashes.

If you’ve seen “Infinity War,” there’s actually a brief mention of Hawkeye and Ant-Man’s whereabouts, and that’s house arrest. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” picks up right after the events of “Captain America: Civil War.” Though not a part of the initial war against Thanos, fans are sure that when “Avengers 4” comes, he and the Wasp will now be a part of the remaining superheroes to suit up for a final battle with the Mad Titan.

“Ant-Man and the Wasp” hits theaters July 9th.
