'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend' Season 3, Episode 2 'To Josh, With Love' Recap: Cruel Intentions And Faking It All The Way [SPOILERS]

Nothing can fill the hole inside of Rebecca. However, she’s not the only one with something to fill in this week’s episode 3 of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” Season 3. Rebecca and Paula finally had an idea to destroy Josh Chan once and for all. But while they were building up their case, Rebecca feels as if it was not enough. Asking Josh for a fine of $600 to $800 feels more like buying shoes than a good ol’ revenge plan. The new opening theme for “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” is catchy and perfectly represents Rebecca’s rage. The latest episode, titled “To Josh, With Love,” will also feature Josh’s journey to priesthood—and also a sub-plot about orgasms.

Rebecca Channels Her ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’

After realizing Paula’s brilliant plan to sue Josh Chan wouldn’t exactly give Josh his due, Rebecca decides to get a different accomplice named Nathaniel. He’s an evil corporate man whose conscience is at the bottom pit of a black hole, so asking for his help to destroy another human life would be easy. Especially considering the fact that he is falling for Rebecca. She shows up at his door offering sex in exchange for helping her out to destroy Josh Chan.

At first reluctant, Rebecca cuts to a Chicago-like musical number telling him all the things she’s willing to do. Nathaniel then agrees and the two embark on a disastrous and “Fifty Shades of Grey”-like plan to ruin Josh’s life. This includes a very unromantic helicopter ride, a dress that only fits a thirteen-year-old, and a masquerade ball. It wasn’t clear how any of this was related to Nathaniel’s ploy to ruin Josh and win over Rebecca but it did present their chemistry rather well. After speaking to whoever in the party about their plans, the two finally have sex.
But just like most plans presented to Rebecca, this one doesn’t feel right. Nathaniel isn’t only targeting Josh, but his whole family as well. His plan included kicking Josh’s sister out of college, giving Josh’s father criminal charges, and ending his grandfather’s life support. Rebecca wanted a diabolical plan but Nathaniel’s way was too evil to comprehend. She asks him to call off the plan because it won’t make Josh feel what she felt when he left her at the altar. She realized that she wants closure more than anything else.

Josh’s Journey to Priesthood and Forgiveness

Two weeks before Rebecca fell into a spiral of rage and denial, Josh finally accepted God into his life. But it was a way to avoid the repercussions of leaving Rebecca at the altar. His excitement about being a priest was shown through a musical number saying he is ready to spread the word of God. But his priest bubble was popped when he found out how grueling the journey to priesthood really is. The show presents how religion is an escape for most people—to which Josh is no exception. He comes off as clueless to what it really means to be a priest at first and even prays to God that he doesn’t want to study to become a priest. He just wants the t-shirt and handing out bread to people.
Despite his friends telling him he was only becoming a priest to avoid an awkward apology for Rebecca, Josh stays. But two weeks studying to be a priest is already hard on him, so what more are 4 to 6 years? It’s obvious Josh doesn’t have the discipline or the dedication to become a priest. Like the other characters in this episode, he is unsatisfied with his life decision but continues to fake his way until he makes himself believe he will get better.

Rebecca decided to don her wedding dress and finally confront Josh. However, it wasn’t heartwarming at all. Rebecca finally tells off Josh with her rendition of Paula’s “Rose’s Turn,” which is about everything she has done to be with Josh. She not only reveals he was the reason for moving to West Covina but every single plot line that lead them to where they are now. It was basically a song recapping everything that has happened in season 1 and 2.  As she stormed off out of the Church, Josh realizes leaving her wasn’t his fault at all.

Not All Women Are Satisfied, Just saying

The episode took a few segues about Tim’s marital issues. Tim is a minor character on the show, we only see him during office meeting or for a good laugh in between minutes. But this week the show wanted to address how some women fake their orgasms. Tim’s song about how his wife retreats to the bathroom after sex to reach climax with her vibrator is quite a funny bit. Especially when every other female in the office points it out to Tim his wife has been faking for the whole duration of their marriage and even pointing out a few statistics about how 75% of women never reach orgasm from intercourse alone.

Paula points it out best by saying his relationship has real communication problems that can’t be papered over with a couple of orgasms. This could be a comparison to the way Rebecca fakes her way through her relationship with Josh. Not with moans and sighs, but with who she is—as well as Rebecca and Josh’s communication issues in their relationship. After revealing everything she has done to be with Josh, Rebecca regrets her decision and she starts the way the episode began—unfulfilled with her life choices.
“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” continues next Friday with “Josh Is A Liar,” 8/9c on The CW.
