'Deadpool 2' Final Trailer: References and Jokes You Might Have Missed

This is going to be one epic f****n’ ride! The “Deadpool 2” final trailer has dropped, and this time, it features more jabs and gags than anyone could ever imagine in an “X-Men” film. Well, technically, it’s not an X-Men film, but basically, it is? I don’t know—you people already have a firm idea of how messed up the timelines are. So let’s just let them live their life.

And as with any other “Deadpool” trailer out there, you can be sure that the Merc with a Mouth is up for subtle easter eggs and references that are intended to subtly (sometimes blatantly) make fun of the other superhero franchise movies out there. Of course, here’s an obligatory “check out the trailer below before you scroll” line:

Massively. Epic. Fight me.

Deadpool 2’s Hints and Jabs

The “Deadpool 2” trailer starts out ominously, with that droning BRAAAAAAM sound added for dramatic effect. However, this is where we get to see how Deadpool himself sets up his team for an onslaught with Josh Brolin’s Cable.

“Hump the hate brakes, Thanos.”

20th Century Fox

Back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Avengers: Infinity War” is gearing up for the final showdown of all its heroes against Josh Brolin’s Cable. Wait. That’s not right. Thanos! Right, there you go. This line is a fun quip from Deadpool, and it just proves how self-aware he is by stepping on the toes of Marvel’s biggest, most threatening big bad.

“FROM THE STUDIO THAT KILLED WOLVERINE”

Hugh Jackman and Dafne Keen in Logan (2017)

20th Century Fox

Seriously, nothing could ever be as marvelous and as epic as seeing Deadpool and Wolverine in one film. Sadly, it’s never going to happen since Hugh Jackman left the “X-Men” franchise for good. “Deadpool 2,” on the other hand, delivers a hard punch to 20th Century Fox with this line. Ryan Reynolds has been very vocal about seeing the two together on screen, to no avail. So this line is as close to a Wolverine-Deadpool team-up we can have.

The Super-duper f****ng group

20th Century Fox

Obviously, this line ushers in the birth of Deadpool’s X-Force. A revamped version of the New Mutants, the X-Force is a group created by Rob Liefield (also Deadpool’s creator) and is led by Cable. Compared to the X-Men, the X-Force is a more violent and aggressive mutant group that seeks to destroy their enemies through bloodshed. In “Deadpool 2,” however, it consists of 7 individuals—Deadpool, Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Bedlam, Shatterstar, Domino, and a normal guy named Peter.

Of course, in the first “Deadpool” movie, Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead were introduced as having a mutant mentor relationship, with the latter one of the youngest addition to the X-Men. In the trailer, we are now acquainted with these new characters in the X-Force storyline (although considerably different than the comic book counterparts).

20th Century Fox

Bedlam (Terry Crews) is a skilled martial artist and can mess with electrical systems—including the human system. He can send electrical signals to your brain without touching you and can make you feel an awful lot of pain. Shatterstar (Lewis Tan) a time-traveler warrior who’s “very good with swords and likes to fight.” Domino (Zazie Beetz), on the other hand, is somewhat similar to Cable. She’s a mercenary who can go head to head with Cable, since Domino is, after all, a super-soldier gone rogue. Finally, we have Peter (Rob Delaney), who can… well… do stuff? The trailer suggests that he’s a regular guy who only saw Deadpool’s ad (Probably on LinkedIn), so who the f**k knows, maybe Peter has a secret shape-shifting power of some sort.

“So dark, you sure you’re not from the DC Universe?”

Josh Brolin in Deadpool 2

20th Century Fox

Yes, we all know how Warner Bros. execs butchered Zack Snyder’s original vision for “Justice League.” But his previous entries—”Man of Steel” and “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice”—in the DC Extended Universe, however, were riddled with darkness and brooding. That’s why when Cable says that Deadpool isn’t a hero and proceeds to stab him with a knife on the shoulder, Deadpool saw this as an opportunity to say hello to his good friends from DC Comics. Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, or Gal Gadot should seriously consider a cameo soon.

“Bring it on, one-eyed Willy.”

Josh Brolin and Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 2

20th Century Fox

A clear reference to the 1985 classic movie “The Goonies,” Deadpool drops this reference while in a truck brawl with Cable. Cable’s not a pirate, but you get the point. And then, the two engage in a point-blank shootout, with Deadpool deflecting the bullets with his katanas. It’s an impressive scene, only to be cut short when we see Deadpool again—this time with bullet holes in his chest. “Whew! Your bullets,” Deadpool notes. “They’re really fast.” This can also hint at Gadot’s “Wonder Woman,” who can also deflect bullets with her gauntlets (more successfully and with poise, though).

Overall, “Deadpool 2” is a promising superhero film that could break records once again. Who knows, maybe he can even go on to help the Avengers kick Thanos’ ass when push comes to shove?

“Deadpool 2” f***ks its way into theaters May 18th.
