Fans Online are Celebrating Scooby-Doo’s Velma being Openly Gay

Fans rarely talk about Scooby-Doo online, but one scene from the latest movie Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! has longtime character Velma Dinkley being openly attracted to another woman. This has been cause for celebration for a lot of fans online, and everyone is suddenly celebrating Velma coming out as a lesbian.

Here’s the scene in question:

The scene has caused a lot of people online to celebrate Velma’s lesbian identity, and even actress Hayley Kiyoko, who played a live-action version of Velma back in 2008, has come out to celebrate the character.

Here are some other posts celebrating Velma’s sexuality:

While the scene from Trick or Treat is the first time we see Velma being obviously attracted to a woman, there have been hints in previous shows about her sexuality; that’s why Velma and Shaggy’s romance didn’t really work in Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, because she was purposefully written as a lesbian.

Though WB may have cancelled the Scoob sequel, there is a Velma spinoff starring Mindy Kaling that’s said to be on the more adult side of things. Besides the show implying that Velma will be solving a lot more darker and violent mysteries, I there’s also a lot of room to explore Velma’s sexuality before she starts hanging out with Mystery Inc.

No release date has been set for Velma on HBO Max, but fans are expecting a premiere sometime within the year.
