George R.R. Martin: Game of Thrones Sequel was Kit Harington's Idea

HBO Max may be gearing up for a Game of Thrones prequel with House of the Dragon, but news had come out that they have started development on a Jon Snow-centric sequel that will push the timeline forward. As it turns out, the series was Kit Harington’s idea.

In a recent blog post by George R.R. Martin, he confirms that Snow (working title) was actually Harington’s idea. He writes:

Yes, it was Kit Harrington who brought the idea to us.   I cannot tell you the names of the writers/ showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet… but Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific.

Though Game of Thrones feels like it ended how Martin expected the series to end, fans have felt that the build-up to all the moments felt unearned, with showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss apparently rushing to end a series that could have spanned several more seasons.

Snow could be an opportunity to give another kickstart to the story of Thrones, and maybe we could build toward an end that would feel a lot more natural. Though we know that Jon ends up back behind the Wall, there’s still a lot of chances to find out what’s happening in Westeros, or wherever Arya ended up going.

No release date has been set for Snow yet, but you can watch out for House of the Dragon which premieres on HBO Max on Aug. 21.
