'Sharp Objects' Season 1, Episode 2 'Dirt' Recap: Getting the Story

Sharp Objects is a show that gets mysterious with each episode. It features an eery soundtrack, and the setting is as creepy as it can be. The peace in the town Wind Gap gets broken when two young girls get murdered. The protagonist makes development in the story as the investigation for the latest victim starts. For a quiet town, Wind Gap is full of surprises.

In this week’s episode of Sharp Objects, Camille Preaker (Amy Adams) looks for clues during the funeral and wake of the latest victim, Natalie Keene. Based on what she finds, Camille confronts Police Chief Vickery (Matt Craven) who dismisses her claims. Meanwhile, Detective Richard Willis (Chris Messina) tries an unconventional method in finding the truth about the murderer.

Camille starts to write notes during the funeral. Her mother, Adora Crellin (Patricia Clarkson) tries to stop her, but to no avail. After Jeannie Keene (Jennifer Aspen), the mother, gives her speech, the funeral program continues. However, Camille’s dress rips, so she goes to a store to buy some sewing tools. She meets her sister, Amma Crellin (Eliza Scanlen) at the convenience store. After this, Camille heads to the Keene family’s house for the wake.

Upon arriving at the wake, Camille meets some of her old friends. Moments later, she searches the house for some clues. Camille comes across Natalie’s room. She finds numerous sports memorabilia and some insects. Eventually, Camille sees Natalie’s pet spider. When Camille sets the spider free, she meets Natalie’s father at the backyard. Camille takes advantage of the opportunity to interview Mr. Keene (D.B. Sweeney). Later that day, Camille meets Detective Willis in the bar to exchange information.

Camille has a strange family. Her mom is all paranoid, and her sister is a boiling pot of trouble. Maybe it has something to do with the town. The residents are mostly mysterious and based on Camille and Detective Willis’ conversation; the town is not as peaceful as it looks. Camille might have more than she asked for when their newspaper releases her article which contained information about Natalie’s room. She did not ask for permission to enter it, after all.

While investigating the case previously handed to him, Detective Willis interviews Police Chief Vickery at Natalie’s funeral. He works on the lead he got from Vickery, but he later decides to take a look on Natalie’s body. Detective Willis wanted to confirm if the killer is indeed a man, so he decides to try the killer’s M.O. Instead. Detective Willis buys himself a pig head and proceeds to remove its teeth, realizing that it is hard to pull that many teeth out.

This guy gives me the creeps. He may seem all normal on the outside, but his methods are a bit too odd. Not trusting the Coroner’s autopsy report is one thing but trying to pull teeth out himself is another. Perhaps Vickery is right in not liking Detective Willis. There is a fine line between doing your job and being obsessed with solving the case.

The Lady in White

One of the kids that Camille interviewed mentioned that a Lady in White took Natalie. While this was an old myth that the residents of Wind Gap used to tell, Camille does not seem too convinced with Vickery’s dismiss of this claim. We did not have a good look of the Lady when she appeared to Camille in the park, but this photo makes me think. After all, Adora did say that she saw much of Camille in Natalie, so she tried to help her. Either way, we have to wait until the next episode to find out.

Sharp Objects continues next Sunday, July 22nd, with “Fix” at 9/8c on HBO.
