'Titans' Season 1, Episode 3 'Origins' Recap: Backstories

Living life as one of the Titans grants barely enough time to recuperate despite their life-threatening injuries. Our heroes waste no time as they look out for their most vulnerable member. At the same time, they struggle with their identities. However, not all their questions have answers. At least, not yet.

In this week’s episode of Titans, Koriand’r/Starfire (Anna Diop) rescues Rachel Roth/Raven (Teagan Croft) from the Nuclear Family. Meanwhile, Dick Grayson/Robin (Brenton Thwaites) visits Hank Hall/Hawk (Alan Ritchson) and the recovering Dawn Granger/Dove (Minka Kelly). When Dick catches up to Kory and Rachel, Rachel’s power seeps out of her control.

Moments after the Nuclear Family take Rachel, Kory follows after them. Once they stop to refuel, Kory’s rescue did not take long. While Nuclear Biff (Logan Thompson), Sis (Jeni Ross) and Mom (Melody Johnson) were distracted, Kory kills Nuclear Dad (Jeff Clarke) as she saves Rachel. The Messenger (Reed Birney) did not take the Nuclear Family’s failure lightly, but he gave them a chance to try again.

Because of Kory’s recent visit to Rachel’s house, she finds information that could help both of them. The duo arrives in St. Paul’s Convent, where Rachel’s Mother, Melissa, took refuge after Rachel’s father assaulted her. The Nun (Meagen Fay) welcomed them in lovingly. Also, Kory’s trip back to the convent helped her remember a bit about herself.

Kory continued to work on a lead to help her remember her identity. Meanwhile, Rachel preoccupied herself with having snacks and playing at the arcade, where she meets Gar Logan/Beastboy (Ryan Potter). However, Dick’s arrival interrupts their introduction. When tension rises between Dick and Rachel, they leave the arcade and head back to the convent immediately.

After talking with Rachel, Dick goes after Kory who took off in his car. Moments later, he finds her inside a storage unit that seemed to belong to her. Kory tinkered with the different objects inside. She sees several papers with strange inscriptions written on them. With Dick’s help, they try to make sense of the evidence that Kory gathered. When Dick and Kory realize that Rachel is part of a prophecy, they feel the earth shake. Rachel, whom the Nuns tried to contain, lost control of her power.

‘Titans’ Season 1, Episode 3 ‘Origins’ Final Verdict

Teagan Croft in Titans

While killing off one of the Nuclear Family’s members fairly easily raised a few eyebrows, this episode is a quality transitioning episode. In the end, the sense of a significant plot about to unfold is there. Also, we finally got to see the Titan couples, Dick and Kory as well as Gar and Rachel, together. However, they could have done Dick’s origin stories better, preferably in a different episode as it sort of derails the viewer’s focus on the plot.

Titans continues on Friday, November 2nd at the DC Streaming Service.
