Velma Gets Renewed for a 2nd Season

No other animated show has gotten as heavily bashed as Mindy Kaling’s Scooby-Doo spinoff Velma, but in the end, it’s Kaling who’s getting the laugh because we’re going to be seeing more of her adult take on Mystery Inc.

As confirmed by Deadline, a second season of Velma has already been greenlit and is currently in development. We don’t have any details about where the story could go, but the finale of the first season did tease the formation of Mystery Inc. and the steady evolution of the characters who we all know and love.

Admittedly, a lot of fans online are not particularly keen on the new direction that Velma went, what with the R-rating and different relationships between the characters. It got so bad that the series was review bombed online as the worst-reviewed animated show of all time.

That being said, the series was said to have been the biggest animated debut on its platform. Plus, some also think that the second season renewal actually came early, way before the first season even premiered.

I guess a lot of the animosity toward Velma could also be rooted in the recent cancelling of a lot more beloved animated shows like Close Enough and Netflix’s Inside Job. No matter how well-reviewed the shows are online though, I think HBO is really just looking at the hard numbers, and maybe the general audiences just weren’t tuning in to the well-acclaimed shows.

For now, catch Velma now streaming on HBO Max.
