Star Wars: Andy Serkis Actually has Backstory for His Andor Character

Andy Serkis had played Supreme Leader Snoke in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, but everyone was delightfully surprised when he actually showed up as himself in the last episode of Andor. While his character seems to be pretty one-note, Serkis reveals he actually came up with a backstory for Kino Loy.

According to Serkis, Loy had been a foreman before he found himself in the prison. Talking to Vanity Fair, Serkis explains:

“What I imagined of Kino’s backstory, before he was in prison, was that he was a union leader. He’s used to working as a foreman. I wanted him to come from a place where he was put in prison for, perhaps, standing up for workers’ rights, and then put into a position of authority because that’s what he does. He is a natural leader. But he really just wants to serve his time. He’s got a family. He wants to get out and get back, and assumes that that’s going to happen after his incarceration.”

So far, it seems that Serkis’ character is another cautionary tale of someone giving into the oppressive system, but it’s interesting that Serkis should come up with a backstory. We don’t know what Kino’s future will be in the series, but I would definitely love to watch him get out—especially knowing what backstory Serkis has for him in the back of his mind.

Andor has been receiving a ton of critical praise since it premiered, and there has been a lot of appreciation for this more complex, Star Wars material. We probably won’t get a second season, but I would love to see what Tony Gilroy does with SW next.

Catch new episodes of Andor on Disney+ every Wednesday.
