Ms. Marvel Co-Creator Says Kamala was Originally Written as a Mutant

Disney’s Ms. Marvel has recently wrapped, and the ending comes with the revelation that Kamala Khan is a mutant. While some scoff at the change of Kamala’s origin of being an inhuman, character creator Sana Amanat has confirmed that Ms. Marvel being a mutant was actually the original intention.

Talking to Empire, Amanat explained:

“Here’s a really important thing that people do not know – when we were thinking about the character of Kamala back, back, back in the day in 2012, 2013, when [G.] Willow [Wilson, comic book writer] and myself were ideating, we originally wanted to make her a mutant. That was the whole intention, to be able to do that.”

She didn’t go onto the reason they turned her into an inhuman in the first place, but some suspect it could have something to do with Marvel Studios not being able to fully use mutants because of Fox owning the IP.

Now with Kamala being teased as a mutant, it opens up the door for her to crossover with the X-Men. Though she does have some fun run-ins with characters like Lockjaw, she also has a memorable run-in with Wolverine in the comics. At some point, I was actually hoping they turned Kamala into one of Peter Parker’s classmates; but I’m also fine if she develops a friendship with Doctor Strange’s new ward, America Chavez. How about another young Avenger like Hawkeye/Kate Bishop?
