Why The CW’s Arrow Is Really ABC’s Revenge … In Disguise

At first glance there’s not much obvious similarity to be found between a green-hooded DC comic-book hero with a bow and a Hamptons socialite with a complicated love life.

Yet comparisons between the CW’s hottest new drama Arrow and ABC’s Revenge, (recently returned for a second season) continue to be a talking point among fans and critics of both shows.

Having seen every episode of both shows to date, we can attest to some pretty strong parallels.

And it appears we’re not the only ones who think so too. Check out these articles we found after just a little digging on the subject of parity between both shows.

‘Are Arrow and Revenge Basically the Same Show?’TV.com

“This is Arrow. It’s like Revenge only with one hundred percent more abs and way more murder.”AfterElton.com

”Arrow’ Pilot Screening at Comic Con: Revenge, Anyone?’BuddyTV.com

So what does this all prove? We think it simply means the theme of revenge is as hot right now as it ever has been. Justice, hope, redemption and forgiveness, which resonate throughout both Arrow and Revenge, are as relevant today as when Alexandre Dumas’ first penned his famous revenge tale ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ back in 1844.

Catch Arrow Wednesdays on the CW and Revenge Sundays on ABC.

This is an interesting comparison. I never would have thought to compare the two shows, but after this there’s no denying that there are some similarities. But I think that the similarities lie on the story arc level. In terms of execution I think these shows are very different and have different feels to them. Revenge is more drama with a little action and Arrow I’d say is more action with a touch of drama, and this is what makes them both great shows to watch despite the similarities in formula. 🙂

plus another similarity… both had periods of time in “exile” Emily inn juvie and Oliver on the island.

I thought the same thing after watching the pilot of Arrow. My first impression was that Revenge does it WAY better!

ok, after seeing this article go up it gave me a reason to give arrow a watch. I heard it was good, but Justin Hartley is my green arrow. Anyway, i watched, and thoroughly enjoyed! so i then read this loverly article (Jen I love you btw) and holy crap! its hilarious, you’re so right. but its nice to see two shows with such similarities that are actually quite different.

Blair, I love you too! xx
I miss seeing Justin as Arrow, but it’s great to see him on TV again in Emily Owens. I think Stephen Amell has great star quality. I think revenge as a theme (and all the stuff that goes along with it) is really hot right now. Obviously they’re quite different shows, but the similarities they share with each other (and to The count of Monte Cristo) make interesting talking points!
