Amazon Says LOTR: The Rings of Power has ‘More than Paid Off’ Their Investment

With a budget of more than $465 million, Amazon Prime Video was making a huge bet with their Lord of the Rings series. While the property wasn’t fully embraced by the fandom, Amazon says that they were pretty pleased with their investment in the series.

Talking to Deadline, Amazon Studios Head of Global TV Vernon Sanders confirms that Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has ‘more than paid off’ their investment. The show had broken records with its premiere, and has garnered over a 100 million viewers with 24 billion minutes streamed. The show has also boosted Amazon subscriptions worldwide, and has also boosted the sales of the original books from J.R.R. Tolkien.

For now, Amazon is said to be committed in greenlighting the originally planned five seasons of the show, but they are taking things one step at a time, with the second season still undergoing production. Even then Sanders says, “We are absolutely committed, we have every reason to be excited. They’ve done a tremendous job.”

Admittedly ROP was never able to match the hype that House of the Dragon was able to generate, but I think its popularity is made to be clear in the long run. The world of Tolkien has managed to resonate to so many audiences for so long, and I think you could say the same about Rings of Power over time.

No release date has been announced for Season  2 yet, but you can catch the complete first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
