Disney had attempted to replicate the success of Pirates of the Caribbean by making a movie based on another Disney ride with The Haunted Mansion back in 2003, but the film didn’t manage to be a hit.
Now 20 years later, Disney is going to be adapting Haunted Mansion again, and this time, we have a kookier cast of characters. Here’s the latest trailer:
Here’s the official description:
Inspired by the classic theme park attraction, “Haunted Mansion” is about a woman and her son who enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters.
The film is directed by Justin Simien (Dear White People) and includes a star-studded cast that has Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Danny DeVito, Dan Levy, and Jamie Lee Curtis. They even managed to nab future Tron star Jared Leto to play the Hatbox Ghost who looks to be the primary antagonist of the film.
While horror movies are usually reserved for more adult audiences, we should expect Disney to bring back horror for kids when it comes to Haunted Mansion. After all, kids should be able to check out the genre without completely traumatizing themselves. They may not have the stomach for Evil Dead Rise, but Haunted Mansion should be right up their alley with genuine spooks without the gore and violence.
You’d think they’d release this around the Halloween season, but I guess a summer horror movie can still make numbers.
Haunted Mansion comes to cinemas on July 28.
