Warner Bros.' 'Batgirl' Movie Gets 'Bumblebee' Writer Christian Hodson

Following Joss Whedon’s exit from the project, Warner Bros.’ solo “Batgirl” movie is back in development, thanks to a new writer who just crossed over from the world of the Transformers.

Whedon was previously attached to write and direct the “Batgirl” movie. But after the harsh criticism surrounding Whedon’s controversial changes made in Zack Snyder’s “Justice League,” the studio seemed keen on cutting ties with the director and scrapping the “Batgirl” film altogether.

Batgirl is back in full swing

However, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, all hope isn’t lost as there’s a new development being made for the “Batgirl” movie. Christina Hodson, who penned the script for the “Bumblebee” spin-off movie, has been tapped by the studio to take on the screenwriting duties for the “Batgirl” movie. THR also states that the film will be a fresh project based on one of the most famous female members of the Bat-family. It’s a good save by the studio, and this proves the fact that we need more female superheroes in the big screen, what with last year’s success over Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman.”

It’s unclear if the new take on “Batgirl” will use some leftover ideas from Whedon, but the filmmaker himself admitted that he failed to create a worthy story for the heroine. “Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story,” Whedon said. Any ideas that he might have made would’ve probably been scrapped entirely, never to be heard of again.

Just when we thought that we’d never see the character properly introduced on-screen again (remember the disastrous “Batman & Robin” movie where Batgirl became a part of the Bat-team with a backstory far from the comics?), it’s good to know that Warner Bros. is still all in for the project, despite the problematic state of the DCEU.
