Become Part of Ariel’s World in Latest Live-Action Trailer for The Little Mermaid

After the retelling of Cruella de Vil’s origin in 2021, Disney is set to come back to their ‘90s Renaissance period with the adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Disney just dropped a new trailer alongside the Oscars, and it gives us a look at everyone else who makes up the world of Ariel.

Check it:

Here’s the official description:

“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

Though Halle Bailey had been at the center of all the marketing for the movie, the latest preview finally gives us a look at Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), King Triton (Javier Bardem), and the rest of Ariel’s animal friends Flounder (Jacob Tremblay), Sebastian (Daveed Diggs), and Scuttle (Awkwafina).

With Disney basically trying to recreate the original films as much as they could with the remakes, I’m thinking that The Little Mermaid could feature some changes that could address longtime issues with the film, like Ariel’s age, and her immediately marrying Prince Eric.

My guess is, the film would end with Ariel free to travel the world, and she wouldn’t have to immediately marry Eric. Then again, I’m just basing this off some mild criticism for the film. I think a marriage is completely in the books; but who wants a shot-for-shot remake?

The Little Mermaid swims into theaters on May 26.
