Behind the Animation: How Wendell & Wild Embraced Key & Peele’s Comedy

Halloween may be over, but there are still a lot of spooky time shows to watch on Netflix, one of them being Wendell & Wilde starring Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key. Just in, we have a behind-the-scenes featurette taking a look at Key and Peele bringing life into the latest film from Henry Selick.

Watch this:

Jordan Peele (Wild), Keegan-Michael Key (Wendell), and Wendell & Wild director/co-writer Henry Selick discuss what went into creating the movie’s most challenging scenes, with time-lapse footage of stop motion animation.

Just in case you didn’t now, Selick is the same man who directed the holiday classic The Nightmare Before Christmas. Though Tim Burton still gets a lot of credit for that film, it was ultimately Selick and his team that brought Jack Skellington and the citizens of Halloweentown to life.

If anything, Wendell & Wild still has a lot of elements that feel very classic Selick. The character design is definitely unique, and they tried their best to make sure that the demons looked just like the actors voicing them.

And while the animation process likes to be precise, it’s kind of interesting that Selick was able to incorporate some of the improv of Key & Peele into their scenes, making for more organic humor coming out of the two.

The two devious demon brothers Wendell and Wild have to face their arch-enemy with the help of the nun Sister Helly, who is notorious for expelling demons. However, the brothers are not only plagued by her, but also by her altar boys.

For now, you can catch Wendell & Wild now streaming on Netflix.
