Warner Bros. Reveals a February 2020 Release Date for 'Birds of Prey'

The all-girl team of villains and heroes will soon hit theaters two years from now. Warner Bros. just announced February 7, 2020 as Birds of Prey‘s release date. The film will be helmed by Cathy Yan and will see Margot Robbie leading the cast. Christina Hodson wrote the screenplay for the film (as she is also currently penning the Batgirl script).

Robbie will reprise Harley Quinn, a role she first played in 2016’s Suicide Squad. Harley will be joined by other female DC characters Dinah Laurel/Black Canary, Helena Bertinelli/Huntress, Cassandra Cain/Batgirl, and Renee Montoya. The film is set in Gotham City and will feature Batman villain Black Mask’s first film appearance.

TheWrap also reports that the next batch of actress tests will begin this week for Black Canary and Huntress. Last week, Deadline revealed a few actresses who are reportedly being eyed for the said roles (including Montoya). Among those considered for Huntress are Sofia Boutella (The Mummy), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane), Cristin Milioti (Wolf of Wall Street), and Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).

Montoya’s role, on the other hand, is being pitted between Justina Machado (One Day at a Time) and Roberta Colindrez (Vida). Meanwhile, Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle) and Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Underground) are being considered for the role of Black Canary.

Black Canary is a skilled martial arts fighter who has sonic scream abilities to defend herself. Katie Cassidy portrayed her in The CW’s Arrow. Juliana Harkavy is currently playing a newer version of the character in the series. Huntress, on the other hand, is a member of the Bat-family. She grew up loathing the Gotham mafia for killing her family, vowing to exact revenge against them. Like Batman, she is a vigilante operating in Gotham City.
