Bo Burnham Set to Write Music For Upcoming Sesame Street Movie

Comedian, musician, and filmmaker Bo Burnham is set to write songs for Warner Bros/MGM’s upcoming live-action Sesame Street movie according to Deadline. The fantasy/musical film produced by Jonathan Krisel is set to be released on January 15, 2021.

Sesame Street the Series and Movie

Sesame Street is a children’s TV show produced by the Children’s Television Workshop and created by Joan Ganz and Lloyd Morrisett. The first episode of Sesame Street came out in 1969, with the educational show aiming to use the power of the media to influence children—helping them grow smarter, stronger, and kinder. The show features different characters like Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Susan, Bob, Oscar the Grouch, Bert, Ernie, and Grover.

Big Bird and the Sesame Street gang are back and already finding themselves in trouble. The movie follows the friends getting mysteriously expelled from their own neighborhood, and finding themselves in Manhattan, New York City. The Sesame Street gang now have to team up with show host Sally Hawthorne to prove that Sesame Street really exists. However, the gang runs into an “evil” mayor, who makes the journey difficult for them, creating different ways just to prove that Sesame Street is a sham. The movie stars Anne Hathaway with Shawn Levy and Michael Aguilar producing.

Bo Burnham Makes His Way to Sesame Street

The Eighth Grade director will be composing and contributing songs for the Sesame Street movie. Best known for his comedy skits, Burnham first started posting Youtube content in 2006. The comedian and singer posted videos of himself singing, with songs like “New Math, Oh Bo, Beating off in a Mirror” and many more. He was invited to perform at the Montreal Comedy Festival, catching the attention of Judd Apatow who later on became his mentor.

Burnham’s Eighth Grade was released in August 2018, following the story of a thirteen-year-old girl “Kayla” (Elise Fisher) and her struggles as an eighth-grader before she graduates. She has problems with social anxiety but copes up with it by producing life advice vlogs. Eighth Grade won three awards such as the Writers Guild Award award for best original screenplay, Directors Guild Award award for best first feature film, and Film Independent Spirit Award for best original screenplay. Burnham also starred in movies like Funny People (2009) and The Big Sick (2017).

The Sesame Street movie hits theaters January 15, 2021.
