Disney Unveils Three New Star Wars Film Slates Until 2026

It looks like the planned Star Wars movie hiatus will only last for two years. Disney just released the full slate of films for the entertainment conglomerate’s Marvel, FOX, and Star Wars properties today—and it’s looking good for fans of the galaxy far, far away.

Following this year’s Star Wars – Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, the new trilogy that will continue the saga has been slated for release on December 20, 2022, December 18, 2024, and December 18, 2026. It’s unclear, however, if these movies are the same ones that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson were reported to be working on. Disney did not mention which of these treatments they’ll be following for the next batch of Star Wars films.

A Brighter Star Wars-Disney Future

This news comes after Disney revealed the upcoming movies the House of Mouse will be creating for their superhero properties and newly-acquired FOX assets. Among these are four Avatar sequels, eight Marvel outings (likely the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe), and nine live-action adaptations of Disney animated classics. It’s a full calendar for the next 8 years, and Disney is keeping it on full throttle what with their powers combined with FOX’s.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirmed the Star Wars hiatus but hinted at the Game of Thrones showrunners’ close collaboration with the studio. “As they finish Game of Thrones, they’re going to segue into Star Wars,” Kennedy said. “They’re working very closely with Rian.”

Meanwhile, J.J. Abram’s The Rise of Skywalker will be the last trilogy that follows the Skywalker storyline and will likely wrap up the mysteries and questions surrounding The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. It bows out December 20th. Apart from Episode IX, director Jon Favreau is also working on a live-action Star Wars series for Disney+, titled The Mandalorian, and another show starring Rogue One’s Cassian Andor played by Diego Luna.
