The Friday the 13th Movie Marathon List Guaranteed To Make You Lose It

Yep, Friday the 13th is a couple of hours away and we can’t help but fidget in excitement and horror. For one thing, it’s Halloween month and it just so happens that it’s also the infamous day for ghouls and creeps and superstition to spread like wildfire. And since it’s a Friday—and the end of the work week—I’ve compiled a couple of movies that officially kick off the countdown to Halloween and to help you get through a night of scares.
Besides, what else could go wrong during Friday the 13th right?

Get Out (2017)

Written and directed by Jordan Peele, “Get Out” stars Daniel Kaluuya (Black Mirror) and Allison Williams (Girls). The story follows their characters, Chris Washington and Rose Armitage, an interracial couple who’s about to do a family meet and greet. Basically, Chris, who’s African American visits his white girlfriend’s (Rose) family in a secluded estate in the woods. Things then make a grim turn for the worst as the family’s secrets are slowly revealed and Chris discovers a horrifying truth that he could never have imagined.

This is a horror film that’s unique in its own right. There are no jump scares and it focuses on a dark, foreboding atmosphere. It’s more like a psychological thriller, as it follows the story of a devout Christian family who’s living a simple life in the wilderness with five children. Their baby suddenly vanishes and all their crops fail to grow, causing the family to turn on each other. Slowly, they are torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, demonic possessions, and pure, utter evil.

I know, zombie films have been around for so long that its beginning to seem like a normal commodity. There are only a number of great zombie films, but “The Girl With All The Gifts” is an exception. For one thing, it’s not your typical zombie-eats-human-and-human-escapes narrative. Based on the book by M.R. Carey, it follows the story of a dystopian Earth where the world has been ravaged by a toxic fungus for many years. Those infected are turned into zombies. However, there’s a catch. The fungus seems to evolve, and there a number of kids who are infected but also immune to it at the same time. When they smell human flesh, they get hungry. But what sets them apart is how they can think and feel like humans. And so they are educated and tested to see how they could fare well as the possible cure for the fungus. The ending is a twist that would leave you wondering, “how the f**k did she even do that?”

Last Shift (2014)

Rookie police officer Jessica Loren is assigned to oversee a bio-hazard waste transfer in her station. Now for some weird reason, this work takes place at night, and so she has to do the night shift. Little does she know that the station is haunted by two cult leaders who both committed suicide in the station, and Jessica is left to deal with the oppressive psychological forces of the place itself. It’s your typical jump scare horror movie, but its nonetheless perfect for a night of screams and heightening scares. After all, a Friday the 13th night wouldn’t be complete with a little bit of jinx and paranoia.

We Are Still Here (2015)

This one is a film best enjoyed by going into it blind. It tells the story of a house that wakes up after 30 years and demands another soul to take. The family who lives in the house is suddenly turned into victims of the house’s vengeful spirits. The task here is to fight back both the living and the dead. If the family fails to do this, their son would be taken and will be lost forever—in hell. There are your common scenes of séances and spirits going wild. But the best thing about this movie is its healthy balance of tension and scares. Some would say that this is a B movie but it’s actually an authentic 70’s era horror movie that gets you going once the action starts.
