'Green Lantern' in 'Justice League's' War Sequence Explained

Now that “Justice League” is out in theaters, fans and general audiences alike are in a frenzy when it comes to the spectacular action scenes of the movie. But one thing that’s been widely talked about is the appearance of a member of the Green Lantern Corps during its Steppenwolf war sequence. Here we saw the Amazonians, Atlanteans, Humans, the Lanterns, and the Old Gods teaming up to prevent Steppenwolf from turning Earth into an apocalyptic wasteland—similar to his home planet Apokolips.
In the scene, an alien-like Lantern flies off to swat off Parademons and goes head to head with Steppenwolf himself. The scene only lasted for a few seconds, but fans couldn’t help but see it over and over as this is the first time a Green Lantern was seen on screen since Rayn Reynold’s’ ill-fated Green Lantern movie. For those wondering about who this Lantern is, a fan explanation has been posted on Reddit, via r/DC_Cinematic.

Justice League’s ‘Green Lantern’ Identity Revealed

A Reddit user named StrandingDeath posted an illustration explaining who that Green Lantern is in the war sequence. Check it out below:

Judging by the image, the Lantern is indeed Yalan Gur, a member of the Green Lantern Corps who made his debut back in 1991’s Green Lantern #19. He’s noted as one of the greatest servants of the Guardians of the Universe around two thousand years ago and was stationed at his home space of Space Sector 2814.
On one of his missions, he was nearly killed by a yellow beast—with the color yellow a common weakness of the Green Lantern Power Ring. This led to the Oans evaluating whether or not to have that arbitrary weakness and ultimately removing the weakness from Yalan Gur’s ring alone, hoping that he would remain as one of their most faithful servants. This, however, caused him to believe that he is invincible, leading him to terrorize his home sector. His corruption eventually led to his demise at the hands of the Guardians.
In “Justice League,” however, his fate is a little bit altered. As he flew off to fight the Parademons and Steppenwolf, he was eventually struck down, with his ring flying off to find a new Lantern. Now, it’s unclear if this is the starting point of the upcoming Green Lantern Corps movie in 2020, but it’s definitely an interesting Easter Egg.

‘Green Lantern’ cameo foreshadowing

In an interview with Collider back in June 2016, director Zack Snyder and DC Comics chief Geoff Johns actually teased about a Green Lantern cameo in “Justice League.” During the set visit, Snyder was asked about his creative relationship with Johns. What he said somewhat hinted at a Green Lantern appearance in the movie:
“Geoff and I have had a great working relationship, even on Batman v Superman, and on Wonder Woman we worked together really closely, and we have a project coming up that we want to do together… I can’t talk about that,” Snyder said. “His knowledge of comics is just crazy. He’s like an encyclopedia of comic books. Like I’ll be like, ‘Hey, is there a weird Lantern from –?’ and he’ll be like, ‘You know…!’ He’s just amazing about keeping everything in canon that I’ve not even heard of —he goes, ‘Yeah, it’s back!’ Like we’ll look through some archive. You know, there’s DC-pedia, but he’s even crazier than that.”
It’s amazing how there’s been a tease of a Green Lantern in “Justice League” all along. And with a set premiere date of 2020, there are sure to be more developments about the upcoming DCEU project in the coming months ahead.
