Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio Gets Its First Trailer

Disney may be gearing up for a Pinocchio movie with Tom Hanks, but Netflix is also set to tell their own story of the little wooden boy with acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro.

Just in, we have a new teaser trailer for Pinocchio, and it introduces us to a while new take on the boy puppet and his father Geppetto. Watch this:

The official description reads:

Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reinvents the classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This whimsical, stop-motion film directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world.

While Disney’s Pinocchio is all about warm and fuzzy feelings, del Toro promises that his take on the character would be a lot closer to the original source material, in that Pinocchio is a more mischievous character. There has also been a change when it comes to the character of Geppetto, who is given a dead son—which pushes him to make Pinocchio in an attempt to reclaim his fatherhood—only Pinocchio isn’t the son he is expecting.

There’s also something about the Italian fascists wanting to recruit Pinocchio for the army as soldier, but the trailer doesn’t really get into that.

Either way, it feels like a bold new take, and I’m excited to see where del Toro would take the story.

Pinocchio is set to premiere on Netflix later this December.
