How Andrew Garfield Trolled the 2023 Oscars

We know that Andrew Garfield’s official run as Spider-Man is over, but after an appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, a lot of people are revisiting just how fun he was as the character.

The recent Oscars actually acknowledged him as Spider-Man during Jimmy Kimmel’s security joke, and Garfield responded with:

As it turns out, the producers actually asked him to do a Spider-Man thwip, but instead, Garfield just gave us a silly face (which the fans online absolutely love).

Talking to Variety, executive producer Molly McNearney explained:

“I went up to Michelle [Yeoh], Michael [B. Jordan], Pedro [Pascal], Andrew, Steven Spielberg, and we told them minutes before the show started, ‘you’re going to be on camera, Jimmy’s going to refer to you as part of his security team. If you could just show some kind of physical support or give him a fist bump… They were all game and they were very supportive.”

Garfield was asked if he’d do a Spider-Man web sling, but “he made his own choice. Which I think was even better.”

Like Tobey Maguire before him, Garfield didn’t actually get to end his Spider-Man run like it was originally intended, thanks to the poor reception of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. With a lot of positive feedback for his return in No Way Home, a lot of fans have been hoping for a continuation of Garfield’s story with a multiverse angle. Hopefully he’ll be game for it down the line.

For now, no release date has been announced for the next Spider-Man film.
