Pretty in Pink: Margot Robbie Shines in Set Photos for Barbie

With Barbie set to come out next year, it will probably be a while before we get to see an official teaser with Margot Robbie in character alongside her other cast mates. Just in though, some set photos have leaked online of Robbie and Ryan Gosling in character as Barbie and Ken.

Just from the photos alone, you can tell that the costumes are pretty much Barbie, with the hot pink and cutesy cowboy outfits. With fashion being such an integral element to Barbie’s brand, we should expect Robbie and the rest of the cast to be decked in the hottest pink outfits cinema has ever seen.

We don’t have an official synopsis for the film yet, but based on some rumors going around online, the movie is going to be going a meta approach when it comes to Barbie as a character and a children’s toy. If they’re to be believed, Robbie and Gosling are said to be playing only one version of Barbie and Ken, and other actors in the cast like Issa Rae and Simu Liu are playing variant versions of the same character.

Seeing that Gerwig has had very interesting approaches when it comes to established source material like with Little Women, I hope that she has a unique take when it comes to Barbie as well. Though I suspect that it will be a kids’ movie, maybe there’s some sharp commentary about Barbie’s role as a feminist icon; addressing both the good sides and the bad.

The Barbie movie comes to theaters on July 21, 2023.
