Maya Erskine Replaces Phoebe Waller-Bridge in Donald Glover’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith Series
Published 1 year ago
It seemed like the Mr. & Mrs. Smith series was going to be great when it was announced that creative powerhouses Donald Glover (Atlanta) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) would be starring, but Waller-Bridge had to unfortunately check out. Glover was left alone with the project, but he seems to have found the right person to star alongside him.
In an interview he conducted on himself with Interview Magazine, Glover reveals that PEN15’s Maya Erskine will be the new Mrs. Smith in the upcoming series. He doesn’t really get into details about the role, but he does say about Erskine, “Yeah. She’s dope. It’s exciting. I really love the show. I’m writing the finale now.”
The interview also tries to pry on his relationship with Waller-Bridge, and he confirms that she had left the series because of creative differences. When it comes to the two Solo stars being friends, he says, “What does it mean to be a friend? I still like her. I assume she still likes me.”
We don’t exactly know what to expect from this Mr. & Mrs. Smith series, but with Glover’s work on Atlanta, we can probably assume that it’s going to be a very unique take on the Spy-vs-Spy action/romance IP. With Waller-Bridge usually being reserved when it comes to her onscreen presence, I was actually wondering how she would pull off a physical role. Looking at Erskine though, she’s quite adept with body humor in PEN15, so I would expect that could translate into some kind of action-comedy when it comes to this series.
We’ll just have to wait and see until our first look.
No release date has been announced for Mr. & Mrs. Smith, but you can catch Glover in Atlanta Season 3
